The first time I met Alex I was 14. It was a summer night on the path behind Schor school and the boys were trying to catch a bat flying above us with their socks and shoes. They were ultimately unsuccessful. I don't have many memories of the years that followed that don't include Alex. Endless days and nights of backyards, dingy basements and garages (where we permanently damaged our hearing) cafeteria lunch times, shows, parties, traintracks, proms and graduations, all of us together anywhere we could be. I'll never forget the time where we were unfortunately up to no good, doing things we shouldn't have been doing (as teens are want to do) and I found myself in desperate need of protection from a stranger. I immediately walked up to Alex and whispered, "Put your arm around me right now." Without a question, without a moments hesitation, his arm was around me. He pulled me tight, asked what was going on, and let me know he had me and would protect me. I didn't choose Alex that night for his toughness or machismo (as much as he would have liked to believe) I chose him because of his deeply sensitive and loving heart. That's what protected me. That's what drew us all to him. I will always think of mr. tough guy Alex when I hear one of his favorite songs, Otis Redding's That's How Strong My Love Is, close my eyes and hear the warm laugher of my deeply goofy, deeply loving friend until we meet again on an endless summer night.

I met Alex when I was in high school. He took me to see Wu-Tang for my 20th birthday. That was 14 years ago & I still remember how much fun we had and how much we laughed. When I was around him, he always made sure I felt safe and that I was having a good time. He always made me laugh until my stomach hurt. I´ll cherish those laughs. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
