Alexander Cameron Obituary

Published by Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home on Nov. 12, 2014.
Alexander G. Cameron, a resident of Poughkeepsie, entered into rest Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 93. Son of the late Alexander and Alice Cheetham Cameron, he was born June 12, 1921 in Providence, Rhode Island. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II as a Naval Patrol Gunner's Mate in the Pacific Theater. He married the love of his life, the former Therese Knaus on November 5, 1944 in New Britain, Connecticut. Mrs. Cameron survives at home in Poughkeepsie. Alex retired as a Senior Planner with IBM in Poughkeepsie. While at IBM, he worked on several interesting projects including helping to set up NORAD and automating airlines' reservations on the east coast. He was recognized for his work when he received IBM's Presidential Award in its Data Systems Division. He was a member of the Wappingers Falls Masonic Lodge 671 and recently was recognized by it for his 65 year membership. He was also a member of the ROMEO Breakfast Club of retired IBM employees. In his free time he enjoyed golfing and was an avid bowler. In retirement, Alex with his wife traveled the world from Australia to Austria, China to the Caribbean and Egypt to Japan. He also spent time tinkering on his computer. He participated in a recent Hudson Valley Honor Flight to Washington D.C. where he saw the World War II Memorial. In the last few weeks of his life, Alex reached milestones and tried to enjoy life to the fullest, living long enough to celebrate one more Veterans Day. He and his wife also recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children, Bruce Cameron and his wife, Jeanne of Windsor, New York and Susan Cameron of Feura Bush, New York; his sister, Alyce Carlson of Westport, Massachusetts; as well as two nieces and a nephew. Family will receive friends on Friday, November 14, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A Celebration of Life will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 15 at the funeral home. Entombment will follow in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, South Avenue, Poughkeepsie.
