Alexander Farkas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Funeral Home - Fanwood on Mar. 20, 2026.
Alexander "Al" William Farkas, a lifelong resident of Scotch Plains and Fanwood, passed away peacefully at his home on March 19, 2026.

Born and raised in Scotch Plains, Al was a proud graduate of Scotch Plains–Fanwood High School. Upon graduating, he worked for many years as a skilled machinist at West Machine Works in Metuchen, dedicating more than 60 years of his life to working for the company.

In 1956, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving honorably as a military policeman in Germany for two years. During his service, he earned a medal in recognition of his good conduct before receiving his honorable discharge.

Before leaving for Germany, Al met the love of his life, Shirley, while she was working at her father's gas station in Fanwood. Upon his return home, the two became engaged and went on to share nearly 60 years of devoted marriage until her passing in 2018.

A dedicated husband and father, he and Shirley raised their two daughters, Donna and Diane, in Fanwood. He was a constant presence in their lives, faithfully attending their sports games and performances and supporting them in every way.

Al had a deep love for the outdoors and took great pride in his landscaping and gardening, earning a reputation for his green thumb. He especially enjoyed fishing, spending many peaceful hours at the lakes near Clinton, New Jersey, and at Sandy Hook.

A familiar and friendly presence in the neighborhood, Al was often seen sitting outside his home, enjoying the day and greeting passersby. He was always ready to lend a helping hand-especially when something needed fixing, as there was little he couldn't repair.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley Farkas. Al is survived by his loving daughters, Donna Melillo (Lou), and Diane Farkas (Anthony), along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood, NJ 07023. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Holy Redeemer Cemetery in South Plainfield.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Al's memory to the American Cancer Society or the Wounded Warrior Project.
