Although brief, in terms of lifetime experiences, my time spent with Alex is memorable as a friend and teammate.
Varsity Baseball 1977. We had a great team. 18 wins 4 loses. Alex was a big part of this teams chemistry, as well as Joe Fugere who we also lost this year. These two guys made up the intellectual part of the team.
I have a crystal clear memory, as if it were yesterday, pitching batting practice to Alex. This session was simulated game level situations. So I was expected to throw my best stuff. Alex strode into the box with the confidence of a professional ball player. He had all the idiosyncratic gestures. Right handed batter, using the bat to tap the accumulated mud from his cleats, scuffing up the batters box to dig in his right foot, adjusting his helmet and standing in there with a purpose. As most pitchers do, I wanted to get up in the count early. I threw the first pitch, my best fastball right down the middle. Alex SMASHED a line drive to left / center. It went out faster than went in. I don't know why, but that moment in time is still with me today.
Coincidentally, several month ago my older Brother was at a social event and ran into Alex when their discussion turned to high school baseball. Alex said to my brother, " Your brother had a great curve ball but I owned his fastball. " So true.
Alex was a class act, I considered him as one of the most mature, intelligent leaders in our class. I had / have so much respect for who he was. My memory of him will live on with me, and I'm sure with all who loved him. God Bless Alex, We will see you again on the field.
