Alexander Wolf Obituary

Published by Sneider & Sullivan & O’Connell’s Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Aug. 24, 2018.
Alex Wolf, 18, was a 2018 graduate of Burlingame High School, where he was energized by STEM subjects and the challenge of AP classes. Fluent in Italian, he traveled with the Italian class to Italy during spring break of his junior year. Alex loved running. He competed on the BHS track and cross-country teams and trained in the mountains of Peru. He also loved the out of doors. When he observed a need for ongoing maintenance of trails throughout the Bay Area, he established the Trail Stewardship Club during his freshman year and led it throughout high school. His job as a support person at Summit Bicycles fostered a love of bikes. He immersed himself in the tools of the biking trade and achieved his bike maintenance certification at the age of 15. Alex's strong work ethic was evident in all aspects of his life. Camp Lanakila in Fairlee, Vermont was where Alex spent his summers from 2010 to 2014. He spent significant time working in the Lanakila woodshop, swimming in Lake Morey, and hiking the Green Mountains. Closer to home, Alex could often be found at the Burlingame Public Library, where he explored the full catalog of science and technology titles. Alex is survived by his parents, Andrew and Drewry Wolf; his brother, Spencer; his sister, Emme; and his beloved dog, Dood. He is also greatly missed by grandparents, Janet and John Simpkinson of Cincinnati and Elizabeth Wolf of Palo Alto, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Burlingame Library Foundation or the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California.

I still think about him often. I remember when he would show me his Pokemon card collection once near the LGI at lunch in 3rd grade. It was cool seeing him during my senior year of high school though.

I will never forget when he bartered fluently in Italian with a local street salesman for a fancy laser pointer during that trip to Italy. For a few months during senior year we were seated next to each other every morning in AP Environmental Science class. I wasn't a close friend, but there's so many unique moments and stories I remember about him. It's still weird to think that he's gone. I was so sure he would go off to do even more amazing things after graduation, and I bet he would have were he still here. He's the type of person where if you knew him at all, you would never forget him.

Dear Wolf family... I am so sorry for the loss of dear Alex. I am absolutely heart broken; Alex was one of the best friends I have had and will ever have. Thank you for raising such a beautiful individual. I was so blessed to have known him. He was one of a kind; too good for this world. I hope one day to be even a fraction of a person he was. I will live my life always trying to be the best I can; helping others and living life to its fullest, just like Alex did. I hope to carry on part of his beautiful legacy.

Dear Wolf family, Kate and I send our heartfelt condolences and can only imagine the pain you feel losing Alex. It is not fair. I remember him showing me his little toy insects as a pre-schooler, reading so early, voluntarily writing math problems on his chalkboard wall in high school. He was a deep thinker who was so smart and capable. The world is worse off without him in it. You have all our love and support.

Dearest Andrew and Drewry,
Even though I had only briefly met Alex in person, I feel like I knew him through Andrew. Your love for Alex showed every day, in the way you cared and thought through how best to parent with each of our kids uniqueness in mind. Alex's strong independence and intelligence as a budding teenager always stands out in my mind. Never a lazy bone (!), [seriously, that's a tough one with teens!!] always working towards something, doing it his way, from his approach with finding jobs, to applying to colleges and making his pick, biking everywhere from small to big events, making it his own. We are so deeply sorry for your loss, words cannot describe. Our hearts and thoughts are with you and your family.

Dearest Andrew and Drewy,
I am sending hugs and prayers in this time of unbearable loss. I remember your lovely and energetic Alex with his red swim team parka, so large it swallowed him up with its bulk. During his time at Bayside STEM, his legs started to grow longer and longer, no doubt bettering his swim stroke. I also remember when Alex first visited the school on a tour. His excitement palpable and we nodded together agreeing, "Yes, this is the right school for Alex!" When you hosted wonderful school parties and meetings, Alex was in perpetual motion playing with friends. I can still see Spencer and Emme magnetically orbiting in his solar system when you came to pick him up from school. The rest of us wondering meanwhile what insight Alex would share next.
Alex was a very special middle schooler who undoubtedly became an amazing high school student. Only yesterday did I learn of his life's end, just as he was about to embark on his college career. Your Alex, an adored son, brother, friend, and student, had bountiful promise as a gifted STEM mind. His path was unique, his insights unusual, and his energy delightful.I can remember that both of you would do anything to spark his imagination and connect his heart to things in the world he cared about most.
I am so very sorry that he is taken from your lives and my sorrow can only begin to express how my heart breaks with yours.
Much love.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Alexander once, as he organized a trail stewardship program through his school to come out to the Golden Gate National Parks to give back to the trails that he loved so much. Just from those few hours, I could tell how wonderful of a young man Alexander is - smart, kind, caring, and passionate. Sending so much love and support, Alexander moved more people than he will ever know, including myself even in just three hours of time.
