Alfred Davis Brown

Early Life

Alfred Brown was born on October 5, 1944, in Gurdon, Arkansas, to Andrew Brown Sr. and Sylvia Goldsby Brown. He grew up in Smithton, Arkansas, the fifth of seven children. At a young age, he became a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Raymond Green.

Education

Al attended Gurdon High School and graduated with the Class of 1963. He was a positive force on the basketball team, earning an athletic scholarship to Arkansas Baptist University. Rumor has it he once scored 56 points in a single game—though he later confirmed it was “only 47.” He was also an avid swimmer who could have easily earned a scholarship in that sport as well.

Work and Purpose

“Work and sports are not just pastimes; they are disciplines that shape character, build resilience, and define purpose.” Each requires focus, sacrifice, and perseverance—values that Al carried throughout his life. After leaving Arkansas Baptist, he relocated to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked for Ford Motor Company for over thirty-two years before retiring in 1998. Even in retirement, he remained active, working with Hertz Rental Car.

Sports and Service

Al’s love for sports never faded. Although he played basketball well. Baseball was always his first love. He played on a senior men’s softball league well into his late 60’s, possibly even 70’s. He officiated and managed youth basketball and softball games until his health began to decline. His dedication reflected his belief in teamwork, discipline, and community.

Family

Alfred is survived by daughters: Lolita House (Raymond) of Princeton, TX; Pamela Jones of Memphis, TN; and DeShawn Gaylor of Detroit, MI. Siblings: Andrew Brown, Jr. (Frankie) of Smithton, AR; Wanda Johnson and David Brown (Deborah) of Houston, TX; and Pauline Anderson of Lansing, MI; along with six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a host of amazing nieces and nephews, other relatives, and a lifelong list of very special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvia Goldsby Brown and A. B. Brown, Sr.; his stepmother, Maude Ester Brown; and brothers, Chester and James Brown.

Legacy

Al Brown’s life was defined by faith, family, hard work, and sportsmanship. He carried himself with calm confidence and an easygoing, quiet nature—never in a rush to do anything. His friends called him “Charlie Brown” because he was always cracking jokes and poking fun. His dedication, perseverance, and strength of character will leave a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Though he is gone, his spirit continues to inspire kindness, humility, and resilience in those he loved.
