Alfred Carr Obituary

ALFRED HIATT CARR North Liberty Alfred Hiatt Carr, 74, of North Liberty, died unexpectantly at home on March 24, 2022, with his loving wife, Sylvia Lewis, by his side. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. A time of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. followed by a light reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation, Doctors Without Borders or the Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association. Memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 167, Iowa City, IA 52244. Al was born Sept. 1, 1947, in Glen Ellyn, Ill., to Alfred F. and Mary H. Carr. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School, where he excelled as a state and double All-American swimmer his senior year (having never previously swam competitively) and as a baseball pitcher. Al went on to attend Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, on a baseball scholarship before transferring to the University of Iowa, where he graduated with a degree in English. Al was an avid reader and an eloquent writer. His path in life displayed his passion for learning and developing new skills, all while building and creating things for others. From selling real estate, constructing residential homes and small businesses, pouring gypsum foundations, to brokering long-haul transportation loads for CRST, West Side Transport, and RFK Transportation, and finally, compiling commercial appraisals, his strength in building trusting relationships with his customers was his lasting career legacy. Al's zest for new adventures included a love for fly fishing, camping and exploring the old west (the Black Hills, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana) and quiet trout streams in the Midwest and Southeast. An entire room of "the ponderosa" he built for he and Sylvia was just for tying flies to take on his fishing trips with Sylvia and son, AJ. Al was a collector of toys. He had more cars and trucks than the garage could hold, motorcycles, bicycles, fly fishing equipment, canoes, campers, and a gator for hauling firewood and working in the timber at home. Big Al was a character! He was known for being able to hold his own in a conversation with a room full of head strong women, sipping on a cocktail and sharing stories for hours with old (and new) friends, and entertaining his grandkids with games and activities that weren't always parent approved. His kids sometimes wondered if he was fully qualified to provide adult supervision! A testament to who Al was, and how he lived his life, is how close he remained with friends he met over the decades. Once Al embraced you in his life, you were there to stay as part of his heart. That included his four-legged children, beloved Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, Cassie, Murphy, Aoife and Finn. Al lived a full life, and he wasn't ready to be done. He had plans! He was beloved by many and will be dearly missed. Al is survived by his wife and best friend of 26 years, Sylvia Lewis; daughter, Chaney Yeast (Andy); son, Alfred John (AJ) Carr (Emily); grandchildren, Nick Yeast (Mckenna Dencklau), Elly Yeast, Gracie Carr and Abby Carr; sister, Mary Lynn Gates; and countless friends who considered him family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill Carr; and brother-in-law, Bob Gates. Online condolences may be shared at www.lensingfuneral.com.

In baseball warm ups, taught me the 'look away' as the ball was about to be thrown to him, causing one to basically balk. What a hoot. Loved him. John Reid

Our high school class had a long list of well-liked and well-respected young men. None more so than amiable Al Carr.

Dear Sylvia,
I will really miss Al, whom I first meet, with you at our Breakfast Club (at the time in the Cottage Inn). I immediately took to his smile and wit. I always looked forward to the next tale. Last summer, at a breakfast held on Kasey and Howie's porch, Al showed up and regaled us with stories. I especially remember one about when, after college, he went to the Cariabbean to teach English. What an adventure and what laughs.
You are both in my thoughts.
Warm Regards
Mike Lewis-Beck

Dear Sylvia,
I will really miss Al, whom I had the pleasure of first meeting, with you in our Breakfast Club (at the time in Cottage Inn). I took to his smile and his wit immediately. Last summer, when Kasey had a breakfast for us at her place with Howie, Al regaled me with stories, including a delightful one about when, after college, he went to teach English in the Caribbean. What an adventure and told in that endearing way of his.
You both are in my thoughts,

My condolences to the family of Al.

I don´t know if Al ever mentioned my name or what we achieved together. But at the 1965 state high school meet, Al Fred Hahn, Tom Owens and I swam in the 200 yd medley relay that won the event, set a state record (time 1:42.4) and placed fourth in the final national ranking for All American Medley Relay times for high school year 1965. I might note that in the same year, a swimmer named Mark Spitz was on the relay team that placed 8th in the nation-but Mark was a freshman and we were seniors-Mark went on to set many more records.) Interestingly enough, because Iowa State rules for setting state records, a new record could be set only in a state meet, so our 1965 record stood for 10 years before being broken in a state meet. (In this current year, our time would be near the bottom of the pack.)

Al also made All American on the 200 yd freestyle team (with Ken Krizan, Jamey Halpin, and Marty Strausburger) ranking 8th in the nation for freestyle relays that year as well.

What is particular was that to the best of my knowledge, Al has never been active as a competitive swimmer prior to the 1964-65 season. I don´t know if Al swam in summer events anywhere (he didn´t swim at Bever or Noelridge or CRCC), and he did not swim on the Washington swim team in 63 or 64. He came out his senior year only. If you look at the Monument for 1965 where seniors listed their activities, he entered swimming as an activity only for year 3. (He wasn´t in the 63 and 64 Monument swimming section either.)

Pretty good for a guy who had never (to my knowledge) been active in swimming, before or after that time.

Al also played baseball and that is the sport that earned him a college scholarship to a college that did not sport a swim team.
