Alfred Kiederer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joseph J Smith Funeral Home Inc on Jan. 30, 2026.
Alfred (Al, Fred, Poppy) Kiederer, Jr. a 40-year resident of Mahopac, NY and most recently of Brewster, NY, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, at the age of 87. He was born on May 24, 1938, in Bronxville, NY, son of the late Alfred and Louise (née Jung) Kiederer.

On October 23, 1960, he married Mary Lou Rossi at Our Lady of Victory Church in Mount Vernon, NY. They celebrated 65 happy years together. Their union was blessed with 3 children: Debbie Cucullo and her husband James, Laurie Barrett and her husband Robert, and son Glenn, and his partner Kelly. Fred is also survived by his brothers Ronald (Rena) and Charles (Linda), and an incredible "Poppy" to nine grandchildren, Mika, Nikki, Natasha, Alexis, Nina, Hunter, Meghan, Katarina and Max, and three great-grandchildren.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Fred served his country with honor and distinction. After completing his military service, he embarked on a rewarding career as an electrical engineer, fueled by curiosity, collaboration, and a love of innovation. Known as Al at work, he worked at Farrand Optical Company, where he was one of the team members responsible for the optical systems of the flight simulators used by NASA to train astronauts for the Apollo missions in Cape Canaveral, Florida. He then spent many happy and productive years at Technicon Instruments Corporation, as a valued member of the Research and Development team, where he built not only groundbreaking technology but also lasting friendships. He especially cherished the camaraderie he shared with colleagues on Technicon's softball and basketball teams, where teamwork, travel, friendly competition, and plenty of laughs were always part of the game.

Fred's interests and activities were as diverse as they were passionate. He was a devout member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed fellowship and traveling with his wife, Mary Lou, and other members of the congregation. An avid sports enthusiast, Fred played basketball, golf, and softball, and he was a dedicated fan of the Mets and Jets. His love for sports was only matched by his love for his family, as he proudly took on the role of patriarch, leading with strength, wisdom, and love. With all of the children living nearby, their days were filled with shared dinners, outings to the Bronx Zoo, evenings at the theater, ski trips, and time spent cheering from the sidelines at sporting events.

All are welcome to attend a visitation on Wednesday, February 4th from 3:30 pm -7:30 pm at the Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home in Mahopac, NY. The funeral service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Yorktown Heights, NY at 11 am on Thursday, February 5th. Interment will follow at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Putnam Valley.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in his name to Hope for the Warriors or the American Heart Association.

Dear Mary Lou and family, Terry and I are saddened to hear of Fred's
passing. He was a great help to me when I was the Town Supervisor
helping out his neighbors in Lake Baldwin. He was a gentleman and
showed great integrity in all his undertakings for our community. I
am convinced his faith will allow him the comfort of the Lord as we
will continue to pray for you and your family, Sadly, Frank and Terry Del CAMPO
