Alfred Smart Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. - Dale City on Feb. 5, 2026.
In his calm and gentle way, Alfred Bernard Smart quietly slipped from earth to glory on

February 2, 2026.

Alfred, lovingly known as "Big Al" and "Junie" by his family, was born on November 2,

1938, in Washington, D.C., to Alfred B. Smart Sr. and Helen Stancil (Smart). He was the

eldest son of ten children. Alfred was educated in D.C. public schools until the age of

14, when he moved to King George, Virginia, to live with his grandparents, Thomas and

Bessie Smart. There, he continued his education at the historic Ralph Bunche High

School.

After high school, Alfred proudly served his country by joining the United States Air

Force in 1957. He was stationed in San Antonio, Texas, and completed a tour of duty in

Korea before being honorably discharged in 1959. Following his military service, Alfred

moved to Boston, Massachusetts. In 1977, he relocated to Prince William County,

Virginia, where he began a long and dedicated career with Prince William Public Works

as a mechanic. He faithfully served in this role for 23 years until his retirement.

In April 1997, Alfred married Theresa Smith (Bolden). Theresa lovingly cared for him

and was a constant source of support throughout their years together.

Joy and laughter were hallmarks of Alfred's personality. His smile was infectious, and

he truly loved people-he never met anyone he considered a stranger. Alfred embraced

life fully and especially cherished his relationship with Christ. In 1997, he joined Mt. Zion

Baptist Church in Triangle, Virginia, where he remained active and devoted. He served

faithfully in the Missionary Ministry, Senior Usher Ministry, and the Male Chorus.

Alfred was a spirited and ambitious competitor with a true love for excitement and fun.

Whether he was playing chess with his grandchildren, cards with family, bowling with

his wife, or golfing with his buddies, he played to win. In his younger years, he had a

passion for race cars and loved both driving and watching them, always drawn to the

thrill of the track and the roar of the engines. When he wasn't on the move, Alfred found

comfort in classic Western movies, happily spending quiet evenings watching the old

favorites he knew by heart. He was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and proudly

represented "Dem Boys".

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara Backus,

Marion Walls, Bessie Trivers, and Delores Helen "Brenda" Lewis; his brothers, John

Thomas "Butch" Smart and Herbert "Chipper" Stancil; and his great-grandson, Azhar

Smart.

Alfred leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Theresa; his sisters, Beverly

(Robert) Clemons, Sandra (Larry) Whitehurst, Phyllis (Artis) Walters; his children,

Donna (Milton) Smart-Gorham, Dana Smart, Yvette (Antonio) Arnold, Charles

(Jeanette) Smart, Monica (Kieth) Raba, William Brian (Beverly) Bolden, Gregory

Bolden, and Janelle (Dwight) Buchanan; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-

grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and

dear friends.

Alfred's legacy of love, laughter, faith, and quiet strength will live on in all who were

blessed to know him.
