Alice was born on August 1, 1932 and grew up on the family farm 17 miles north of Midland, Sd. She was the youngest of two children born to John Jeffery and Anna (Wolff) Willoughby. She attended grade school in rural Haakon County and graduated in 1950 from Midland High School.
On August 27, 1950 Alice was united in marriage to George Evans in Midland. They made their home on the So Dak Ranch where George was employed. In 1952, while living on the ranch, their daughter Valerie Ann was born. Later they moved into Hayes when George accepted a job with the SD Highway Department. In 1961 George was promoted and they relocated to Isabel, SD. After his retirement in 1992 they moved to Belle Fourche. In 2019 they moved into Belle Estate Assisted Living. After George passed away in 2021, Alice returned to their home in Belle with “Ginger”, her precious cat, where she lived independently until the last few months due to an unexpected health issue.
Alice’s greatest joy was taking care of her family and home; so she remained a stay-at-home wife and mother for many years. When she ventured out into the working world, tooling candles for Hel-Mar Industries in Isabel was her first place of employment. She thoroughly enjoyed working with her hands and creating beautiful candles. Next, she became a cook at the Isabel School and loved greeting all the kids as they came through the lunch line. After a back injury which led to retirement, she joined Valerie at “Mom & Me”, a home-based crafting business, which took them to craft fairs meeting many interesting people. Alice was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche. In her later years she spent Sunday mornings with Pastor Salem and Dr. David Jerimiah. Everyone loved getting her homemade buns, caramel rolls, fudge, and divinity at Christmas. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting and working outside with her flowers and garden.
Grateful for having shared her life include her daughter, Valerie (Al) of Belle Fourche, grandson, Tigh Garr of Belle Fourche, great-grandson Preston Garr of Rapid City, sisters-in-law Betty Shannon, Sturgis, SD and Verona Evans, Rapid City, SD, and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She also leaves behind her special companion “Ginger.”
In addition to her husband George of 70 years; Alice was preceded in death by her parents and step father Robert L. Evans; daughter Constance Marie; grandson Harvey Albert Garr, Jr.; brother, Wallace Willoughby; sister-in-law’s Jean Telford and Irene Willoughby; brothers-in-law Robert Evans, Gene Telford, and Philip Shannon.
Alice will now complete her long-awaited reunion with her loving husband, daughter and loved ones who have gone before her. She will be laid to rest by her husband at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.
