Alice Ann Fitzgerald
1940 – 2024
AUGUSTA - - Alice Ann (Fraser) Fitzgerald, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, age 83, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2024. Born November 5th, 1940, in Ridgewood, NJ, to Hattie Bendschaedler and William B. Fraser, Alice spent her early years in Upper Saddle River, NJ.
After graduating from Grace Downs Air Career School, Alice began her career as a ticket agent with Mohawk Airlines in New York City, where she met many fascinating passengers and enjoyed travels to California and Nassau, Bahamas with her mother.
She met Richard Fitzgerald at a high school reunion in Rutherford, NJ, just as he was about to enter the Air Force. After Richard's return from Thule Air Force Base in Greenland, they married on May 11, 1963.
The couple's adventures led them to Maine, where they decided to settle after a memorable vacation in Bar Harbor. They welcomed two children, Jennifer Alice on January 30, 1969, and Richard Scott on December 26, 1972.
Richard's career with Cole's Express took the family to East Hampstead, NH, where they found a close-knit community and lifelong friends. Alice cherished the neighborhood gatherings, where son Richard would eat Sunday dinner at home and then go over to the neighbors for a second meal – this time Italian food.
Returning to Maine, Alice found her passion working at the Colby College Museum of Art. One of her favorite things was to manage the outreach program and that brought more than 2,000 children to the museum each year.
Alice's love for art, gardening, nature, and her family was evident. She was known as 'Sweet Alice' to many and was a kind and gentle person to all who were lucky enough to know her.
Last year, Rich and Alice celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in Boston, surrounded by their children and grandchildren. Alice's parting words, "I will miss my family, but will carry them in my heart, always," reflect her enduring love.
Alice is predeceased by her parents, Hattie Bendschaedler and William B. Fraser; her in-laws, Catherine and Ronald Fitzgerald; her sister, Hattie Scafuro; and several beloved sisters and brothers-in-law. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Richard Fitzgerald; her children, Richard & Stacy Fitzgerald, and Jennifer & Mark Buker; her grandchildren, Kira, Bryson, Rylan, Brittany, and Tyler; and her great-grandson, Daniel.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Alice's memory can be made to the Alfond Youth Center, 126 North Street, Waterville, ME 04901, or at clubaycc.org.
A Funeral service will be held at Veilleux-Redington-Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville, on Tuesday November 5, at 4 pm.
Arrangements are entrusted to the compassionate care of Veilleux-Redington-Lawry Brothers. Memories of Alice can be shared and an online register book can be signed by visiting her memorial page on www.vrlfuneralhome.com.

Incredibly sad to hear this news. One of my all time favorite family members and one of the warmest people I have ever met. Alice and my father were first cousins. My condolences to Richard and the entire family.

Alice was not only the mother of one of my closest friends/partners in crime, she was also a kind woman who helped me during a difficult time. When I was going through cancer treatments ten years ago, she made me a slew of beanies to wear on my bald head. She also made me a super soft one that I could wear to bed because it hurt to have the stubble hit my pillow. She will always be sweet mama Alice in her pearls. Sending so much love to her family.
