ALICE HARMON Obituary

ALICE ANN HARMON

Oct. 3, 1940 – Jan. 10, 2026

Alice Ann Harmon was born on October 3, 1940, and passed away on January 10, 2026. Alice Ann, daughter of Jesse and Lucile Shaw, moved to Woodland Hills, Ca., after the state built the 101 freeway over their home in N. Hollywood. Alice Ann grew up in the San Fernando Valley, matriculating through Canoga Park High School. An active youth, Alice Ann enjoyed tennis and going on family vacations to national parks where she developed a love of nature and the environment.

Alice Ann went to USC where both of her parents had attended (Jesse played guard during the Trojan's "Thundering Herd" era). Alice pledged Gamma Phi Beta sorority creating a strong foundation for lifelong friendships. She began teaching elementary school in Santa Monica and then married former husband, James H. Harmon, dec'd. They moved to El Centro and raised two sons, Jimmy and Steven. An active member of the Imperial Valley community, from playing tennis to hosting bridge parties, working as a travel agent, she loved hanging out with the neighborhood families, sitting on lawn chairs on warm summer nights drinking cold Coors Light, while the kids played until dark.

An original "Valley Girl," Alice moved to the beach in the early 1990's and became a deep-rooted member of the Laguna community. She embedded herself in the arts, which included singing with the Laguna Beach chorus, volunteering at the Festival of the Arts, watching the "Missiles of October" at the Marine Room and was honored to be a cast member in the Pageant of the Masters. She continued working as a travel agent, allowing her to take "travel agent trips" all around the world. The unofficial "Queen of the Park," Alice Ann was a perennial fixture at Bluebird Park "Concerts in the Park." Alice Ann was infamous for arriving early in the morning (before the permitted time) to secure a prime spot for her friends and family and was especially thrilled when her granddaughters visited to dance in the park. Alice Ann found solace memorializing her son Steven, artist, by petitioning the city to install his masterpiece "Cathexis" at Riddle Park in Laguna Beach.

Alice Ann maintained her connection with USC by hosting football tailgate parties with Gamma Phi's, friends and family. Alice Ann fervently participated in alumni and sisterhood associations including Trojan Guild, P.E.O., PanHellenic, bridge and breakfast group at Wilma's on Balboa Island.

Alice Ann relished telling stories about the goings-on of everyone she knew. She was a loyal friend and a loving sister, mother, grandmother and will be remembered for her active spirit and the simple joy she found in exploring the world and bringing people together. Alice Ann is survived by her son, Jimmy, brother, Fred Shaw (wife Cheryl), and was most proud of her three granddaughters, Cora, Greta and Anne Harmon. Alice Ann, Fight On!

All are welcome as we celebrate a beautiful life on Friday, March 6, 2026, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Laguna Beach Woman's Club, located at 286 St. Ann's Drive, Laguna Beach. Alice was a long-time friend going back to the days of El Centro! So many memories of all our families spending time together. In recent years, she sent me annual birthday cards, which I so enjoyed. See you Jimmy on the 6th.

Alice and I met at USC, we had a number of classes together.
She and Jim moved into our apartment complex just off campus. They were our neighbors, and we often shared dessert and enjoyed game nights. We were fortunate to stay in touch through El Centro and Laguna.
She was always cheerful, and great about staying in touch.

Many fond memories.

Alice was a good friend! We met at tryouts for a community choir in Laguna Beach where we  happened to stand side by side. That choir, named Lagunatunes, was lots of fun and we both enjoyed it very much. It was also the beginning of a long friendship.

Alice was famous for her setup at the outdoor concerts in Laguna, many of which were at Bluebird Park, just down the street from her house. She would go with a car full of mats, tables and chairs, food, and everything that anyone could want for a special day in the park.
She would arrive and set up her special place in Bluebird Park or Heisler Park or Main Beach.

Alice made many friends and acquaintances as she sat for a few hours waiting for the concerts to begin. I think her favorite days were those when her son and or her granddaughters came to enjoy the concerts with her.

Concerts and life, in general, will not be the same without Alice. I miss her very much!
