KERTESZ, Alice – of Clio, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the age of 106. She will be interred at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery next to her beloved husband, John. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may plant a tree in honor of Alice.
Alice was born on January 18, 1919, in Shawano, Wisconsin, to the late Charles and Barbara (Kalisek) Tomashek. She grew up among dairy farmers; her father was a cheesemaker. Alice graduated from Shawano High School, attended a teacher training school and enjoyed working as a rural schoolteacher, teaching first through eighth grades in a one-room schoolhouse. On October 5, 1943, she married John Kertesz, and together they shared 61 years of marriage. John preceded her in death on June 10, 2004. Alice was a former member of SS Charles and Helena Catholic Church in Clio and most recently was a member of Holy Redeemer Church in Burton. During her younger years, she was very active at the Clio Senior Center. Alice enjoyed baking, especially cakes, and she liked collecting different recipes from local farmers during her teaching years.
Alice is survived by: Daughters: Barbara (Geza Bottlik) Gutek and Mary (Gerald) Bryan; Grandchildren: Rachel Gutek, Christopher Gutek, Daniel Bryan, and Amy Welsh; Great Grandson, Eric Gutek; Many nieces, nephews, extended family. Alice was preceded in death by: Husband, John; Daughter, Theresa Welsh; Parents, Charles and Barbara Tomashek, and all seven of her siblings.
