Alice Lucille Roberson Makin, lovingly known as "Mimi" or "Mamaw" to her family, passed away peacefully on November 3rd, 2025. Born on December 22, 1932 and raised in Wynnburg, Tennessee, Alice lived a full life grounded in faith, family, and a steadfast sense of purpose.

A graduate of the University of Tennessee at Martin, Alice earned her degree in education and went on to teach for more than 30 years in both Lake County and Wise County School Systems. She was a firm but caring teacher - one who believed in high standards, hard work, and doing things the right way. Her students respected her deeply, knowing that behind her disciplined approach was a heart devoted to helping them succeed.

Alice met her lifelong love, her husband of 65 years, Buddy Makin, while they were still in high school. They were true partners in every sense - childhood sweethearts who built a life together rooted in devotion and mutual respect. In 1975, they moved to Buddy's birthplace of Big Stone Gap, where Alice continued teaching until her retirement. They cherished their years there, finding peace and beauty in the quiet rhythm of life in the Virginia mountains. The two shared many interests, including antique collecting and Tennessee Vols football.

Alice was a faithful member of the Tiptonville Church of Christ. She was a talented seamstress for many years and was known for her impeccable sense of style. She enjoyed lively conversation, fried catfish by the lake, and the comfort of home and family.

She is survived by her four children, Brad (Sarah) Makin, Mary Makin, Tom Makin, and Katherine Makin; a sister, Hattie Trover; six grandchildren, Will Slemp, Molly Slemp, Jeremy Makin (Michelle), Christopher Makin (Valerie), Katie Makin Fisher (Andrew) and T.C. Makin (Carson); and eleven great-grandchildren. Her steady love, strong example, and quiet strength will remain a lasting influence on all who knew her.

Memorial visitation will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 6, 2025 at the Tiptonville Church of Christ. Dyersburg Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

In addition to her parents and husband, Alice was preceded in death by a brother, James Barthell Roberson; and two sisters, Shirley Fritts and Judy Fraley.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tiptonville Public Library in her memory.

I am so saddened by this news but also rejoicing that Mrs. Makin is now with Jesus and reunited with her beloved Buddy. I had Mrs. Makin in 1st grade at PVPS. She was one of a kind. She taught me to read which opened up a whole new world to me. She was an incredible teacher, so loving but demanded respect and disciplined us fairly. The world has lost a remarkable woman. I will never forget the impact she made on me. Your family is in my prayers. She ran the race beautifully. God bless you all.
