ALICE JEAN THOMAS PETERMAN

(Alice) Jean was born July 12th, 1927, in Hollidaysburg, PA to Isaac F. Thomas and Mary L. Swartzwelder Thomas. Her husband of 64 years, Walter R. Peterman, passed away in March 2013. She is survived by son Thomas L. Peterman and wife Debra (Virginia), daughter Debra S. Peterman Leach (West Virginia), son Keith A. Peterman and wife Linda (Georgia), son Scott G. Peterman and wife Elizabeth (Maryland). She is also survived by a wonderful legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

During her husband's twenty-year Naval career, they traveled throughout the world, including Guam, Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines. Eventually, they settled in Woodbridge, VA in 1963.

In 1982, Jean and Walter joined the First United Presbyterian Church of Dale City. She was active as a Shepherd, a Deacon in Stephen Ministries, and helped form the Bereavement Committee. She worked with the Cooperative Counsel of Churches to help establish the Hilda Barg Homeless Prevention Center where she oversaw the Center as Meals Coordinator. She was instrumental in having the Winter Drop-In Center opened as well.

Jean was active in the Red Cross Bloodmobile Service, acting as the Chairwoman for Eastern Prince William County Volunteers for many years. She also spent many years as a poll worker for the Prince William County Office of Elections.

Jean's well-known love of sports took her to Virginia Tech for Hokie football games and to Washington D.C. for Redskin football games. She attended Washington Senators games in the 1960's and then National's games in the 2000's. She was also a big fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jean, her husband, and three other couples helped form the first Sports Club for girls in Eastern Prince William County in the early 1960's. She helped her husband form the Grand Squares Square Dancing Club. With the club, they travelled all over the U.S., calling and teaching square dancing.
