CAMDEN……………………Alison Norton Montgmery (born Janet Alison Norton) of Camden, died

March 24, 2026 at the age of 93. She was born in Portland and was the daughter of R.

Thompson and Janet P. Norton. She spent her childhood in Kennebunkport and later, she and

her parents moved to Washington D. C. She graduated from Holton-Arms School and Junior

College in 1951 and 1953. After graduating Alison worked at the Department of Justice as

Secretary to the Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division.

She married Philip H. Montgomery on August 29, 1959, and after a brief time in Boston, they

built a home in Cape Elizabeth where they lived for 33 years. Alison worked in the Cape

Elizabeth school system as Secretary to the school nurse for 11 years and following retirement,

she and Phil moved to Camden. They settled on Ragged Mountain Road and later moved into

the Quarry Hill retirement community.

When her children were young, Alison was a volunteer in health programs at the Cape Elizabeth

schools and deeply involved in supporting her children in the Sugarloaf Freestyle program.

During those years she was President of the Cape Elizabeth Health Council, President of the

Greater Portland Arts Council, member of the board of Community Health Services, and a

member of the Junior League of Portland. Additionally, she was a Daughter of the American

Revolution and member of the First Congregational Church in Camden. Over the years Alison

enjoyed sailing and boating in Penobscot Bay, skiing, reading, and collecting pictures of her

family, particularly of her grandchildren in their activities.

Surviving is a daughter, Janet Welch, and her husband, Robert Welch, of Rangeley; a son, Hugh

Montgomery, and his wife, Marcia Babcock Montgomery, of Bainbridge Island, WA;

granddaughters, Page Montgomery of Bend, OR, and Eliza Montgomery of Los Angeles, CA;

grandson, William Welch and his wife, Cara Welch, great-grandsons, Benjamin Welch and Liam

Welch, all of Westwood, MA. Alison was predeceased by her husband Philip H. Montgomery in

2018.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Make a Wish (Maine) or the Camden Public

Library.

No public services are planned. Condolences may be shared with the family at
