Allen Beebe Obituary

Published by Carmon Windsor Funeral Home on Jan. 7, 2017.
Allen Richard Beebe, 89, of Windsor, CT, died peacefully at home on January 7, 2017. He was the son of James Beebe and Amelia Katherine (Rifenbark) Beebe and was born in the hospital founded by his father and uncle, Beebe Hospital, in Lewes, DE. He was predeceased by his younger brother William and his older brother James and his older sisters Elsie, Elizabeth, Jean, and Peggy. Allen attended The Hill School, earned his AB from Princeton University in 1951 (where he also lettered in baseball), and his MA from Trinity College in 1970. After graduating from The Hill (Phi Beta Kappa), Allen enlisted in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II, first preparing for the invasion of Japan and then serving in occupied Germany, from August 1944 to October 1946. Besides lifeguarding for the Rehobeth Beach Patrol prior to his enlistment, Allen was a prep school teacher for 43 years, first at Westminster School (Simsbury, CT), and then at the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor. He was appointed to the Loomis faculty in 1955 where he was an unforgettable instructor of history, served as assistant dean, as adviser to the Foreign Policy Association, as head varsity baseball coach (1969-1985), as assistant coach to junior varsity softball (1990-1997), and as coach of Wolcott Club football, basketball and baseball, amongst other duties. He took a sabbatical in 1974 to England and created a treasure trove of oral history interviews with World War I veterans. His baseball teams won five prep league baseball titles (numerous major league scouts called his 1977 team the best in New England) and the club basketball championship trophy was named in his honor. He retired from teaching in 1997. He had a distinguished baseball career as a player, including pitching for Princeton against Yale (including President George H.W. Bush) in June 1948 in what was to be Babe Ruth's last public appearance, pitching in the semi-pro DelMarVa leagues, and being inducted into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000. He enjoyed fishing, particularly with his best friend, Samuel W. "Steve" Stevenson, canoeing, fox terriers, Princeton University athletics, cultivating his fig tree, dining out, throwing parties, and a good Manhattan. He was an avid reader and assigner of books and believed firmly in lifelong learning. He is survived by his friend and former wife, Barbara (Engel) Beebe of Friendship, ME, and their three children: Susan A. Beebe and spouse Jonathan Frost of Rockland, ME; Will A. Beebe and spouse Valeria Beebe of Sao Paulo, Brazil; and Seth. N. Beebe and his spouse Wendy E. Beebe of Windsor, CT; and two beloved grandchildren: Charlotte Beebe and Miguel Beebe. A memorial service will take place on March 18 at 1 PM in the Loomis Chaffee Chapel with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Farmington River Watershed Association, 749 Hopmeadow St Simsbury, CT 06070.

Think about Al frequently. He was unforgettable. He lives on in his sons and daughter!

Al taught me classical history, mentored me as a young Loomis faculty member, and gave me life-long lessons during our dinners out and trips to see Yale vs. Princeton basketball games. I shall miss Al's good humor and great story telling. I think we even convinced some LC students that we were holding a "selection" process one year on the second floor of Founders. He truly wanted his students to experience history. I shall miss Al and will toast him with a Manhattan!

Al was a dear friend for over fifty years. Many of my fondest memories are of fishing with him on dozens of lakes in Connecticut and at Cape Cod. We never forgot that he caught a 42-inch striper from my boat in Hamburg Cove. When I had my saddest moments in 1984, he was my greatest comforter and has remained so. I will always remember the Allyn-Wolcott football and basketball games and our experience with Varsity Baseball, especially the final Kent game. I send my love to Barbara, Seth, Will, Susan, and Charlotte.

Mr. Beebe was my freshman history teacher and quite the character. He had a sense of humor, and was an engaging teacher. I remember helping him with some projects at his house freshman year and always enjoying our conversations. He will be missed.

Allen was an unforgettable teacher and coach. His intellect, wit, and passion were hallmarks of this remarkable man. He taught me a great deal about commitment, hard work and fair play. Although a fierce competitor, it was all about the "team," giving your all and having fun. I truly relished our too infrequent meetings as the years flew by. Barbara ,Will, Seth and Susan - hold on to good memories .
Much love,

Mr. Beebe was a beloved teacher of mine at Loomis Chaffee. I am now a history teacher myself and I credit Mr. Beebe's passionate, entertaining, erudite teaching style with sparking my own love of history. (I only wish I could find the "I saw 'Gunga Din' with ARB" t-shirt that he gave me.) I feel lucky to have known this excellent man and am very sorry to learn of his passing. My thoughts are with his family, especially his son, Seth, who was my basketball coach and a mentor to me in high school.
