Allen Corbin Obituary

Allen J Corbin, Jr., aka Packrat, Corby, Pops, passed as peacefully as possible Friday, January 9th, surrounded by his big loud family blaring "It's a Run for the Roses".

Born to humble beginnings in Reading, Ohio, in 1948, he worked hard to build a successful financial advising group with his son and son in law and was most proud of his family and large network of friends.

Never one to turn down a good time, he woke up on the hood of a car as the sun rose over Churchill Downs on Derby Day in 1967. He continued that tradition for 52 years in a row and despite every kind of weather, never missed a First Saturday in May (FSIM). He earned the nickname "Mr Derby" and people from near and far looked forward to his outrageously themed Derby Eve parties and wild outfits at the track.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Christine "CC" , with whom he traveled the world. From Cuba to Egypt, Paris to Hong Kong, there was barely a place left to visit across the globe. Pops talked often of his wanderlust and instilled a deep appreciation of other cultures to those around him. He made lifelong friends across the world and invited people to the Kentucky Derby everywhere he went.

He loved welcoming guests from Iraq, Australia, France, China and Russia to Louisville and one of his favorite activities was to get out his gigantic atlas and learn more about where they lived over a tall glass of Kentucky bourbon. Pops never met a stranger, and if you spent any time with him, it was fun, engaging and always surprising. Countless friends of friends, old pals and new acquaintances all enjoyed a boat ride, a hometown tour or a burger on the grill by the pool.

He is also survived by his two children Shannon (Shelley) and Brett (Samantha) that are going to be lost without him for awhile, but are committed to carrying on his Captain Fun legacy.

His seven grandchildren - William, Patrick, Sarah, Colin, Katie, Ella and Jack adored him as well and have incredible memories of pancake breakfasts, bedtime stories, family trips to Montana, Ocean City, New Jersey and Summer Sundays on the river. They have been forever changed because he loved and supported them in any and every way possible.

He loved a large network of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family too.

Mostly, we will miss his infectious smile, short phone calls, spirit of adventure, love of horse racing and enthusiasm for fun!

We are all so much better to have known and loved him, and he will be forever and deeply missed.

We will gather to remember him on Saturday, January 24th at The Louisville Boat Club 4200 River Rd, Louisville.

Visitation from 2-3 p.m. with a celebration to follow at 3 p.m.

Memorial donations can be made to The Oldham County American Red Cross or The dePaul School - depaulschool.org.
