MONONA, IOWA
Allen Edward Werges, 91, of Monona, formerly of Garnavillo, Iowa passed away Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Garden View Place surrounded by his loving family.
Allen was born on December 10, 1933, in McGregor, Iowa, to Amanda (Biederman) and Raymond Werges. He had a loving childhood, living on the family farm with his brother, Raymond Jr., and his sister, Ila. After graduating, he joined the United States Army and served in Korea and the reserves, until he was honorably discharged and returned to the family farm. He met the love of his life, Esther Louise Brase, and they married on February 10, 1955.
Allen was a faithful child of God and a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. He attended the Messiah Lutheran Church in Panama City, Florida, and attended St. Paul’s and Faith Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa. He was a Jack of all trades, working as a farmer, welder, and carpenter. He was President on the Iowa State Fair Board, President and Secretary of Clayton County Fair for many years and member of Farm Bureau, American Legion and Young Farmers Card Club.
Allen enjoyed fishing, hunting, walking, mushroom hunting, and traveling to Canada and around the United States. From 1988 to 2014, they would spend their winters in Florida. They left the family farm on May 15, 2014, and moved to Garden View Place.
Allen is survived by his wife, Esther; his two children: David Werges, and Pamela (Delvin Glover) Johanningmeier; son-in-law, Sheryl Zittergruen; grandchildren: Lesa (Jason) Reimer, Steven (Lisa) Zittergruen, Tessa (Steve) Shea, Kristopher (Becky) Werges, Kevin (Rachel) Werges, Marcus (Caterin) Werges, Matthew (Carrie) Johanningmeier, Nathan (Missy) Trappe, and Ashlee Johanningmeier; nineteen beloved great grandchildren and number twenty is on its way; and one great-great grandchild.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Amanda, and Raymond; daughter, Mary Zittergruen; siblings: Raymond Werges Jr. Ila Eye; and a daughter-in-law, Elayne Werges.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested trees, plants, and memorials will be divided between the American Legion Post 723, Garnavillo; MFL Ambulance Service; Clayton County Fair Grounds; Garnavillo Fire Dept: and Crossing Rivers Health Hospice
Visitation will be held from 5 – 7 p.m. on Monday, June 23, 2025, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo with a visitation beginning one hour prior to services.
