Alta (Sheridan) Smith was born on February 17, 1944, in Redfield, South Dakota, to Robert and Daisy (DeYoung) Sheridan. She attended elementary and high school in Brentford, graduating with the class of 1962.
On July 21, 1960, Alta married her high school sweetheart, James H. Smith. Together they shared 65 years of marriage and built a loving family. They were blessed with two children, James Dean and Suzanne Lea.
Alta worked at the Farmers Bar in Brentford, first on Main Street and later on Highway 20, where she formed lifelong friendships. In 1977, she became manager of Kessler's Deli, Catering, and Restaurant, where she took great pride in running the kitchen. She often shared with her family, "A job worth doing is a job worth doing well." Alta retired from Kessler's in 2010 after many years of dedicated service.
Alta belonged to the United Church of Christ in Brentford. She enjoyed teaching beginning piano to the many children who came to her home each week after school. Alta also had a special love for pink Depression glass and spent years adding to her collection.
She supported her family's events and accomplishments with pride and joy and was cherished for her dedication, warmth, and strong work ethic.
Alta is survived by her husband, James H. Smith of Brentford; her children, James D. (Debra) Smith of Conde and Suzanne L. Smith of Brentford; grandchildren Tracey (Matt) Buisker of Brookings, SD, Tara (Aaron) Bulow of Valley City, ND, Teri (Blake) Klinsing of Pipestone, MN, and Michael (Jussy) Smith of Brentford, SD; and great-grandchildren Abby and Emma Buisker; Andon, Bowan, Conley, and Decker Bulow; Colter and Emberly Klinsing; Cash and Carson Smith; and Amaya Van Zante.
Preceding Alta in death are her parents and two brothers, Delvin and Russell.
Her love and legacy live on through her family.
