Alvara Volkmann Tompkins

Alvara Volkmann Tompkins, 90, of Poughkeepsie, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Vassar Brothers Hospital.
Born, September 9, 1935, in Peekskill, Alvara was the daughter of the late Peter Francis Volkmann and Nora Scott Volkmann.
Alvara worked for many years as a real estate agent with Multiple Listing Service in Red Oaks Mills, She was deeply devoted to caring for others and opened her heart and home as a foster parent, welcoming 18 foster children throughout her lifetime. Alvara was also a faithful parishioner of St. Peter's Church.
On November 24, 1955, at the Church of the Assumption in Peekskill, she married Thomas Tompkins, Mr. Tompkins predeceased her in 2005.
Alvara was an avid baker and lifelong reader, she also treasured time spent with her close circle of friends, often gathering for coffee and conversation. Above all, she cherished time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Alvara is survived by her four children: Thomas Tompkins, Christine Leon and her husband Juan, William Scott Tompkins, and John Tompkins and his wife Pamela. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Annie Eng and husband Devon, Thomas William Tompkins, and Andrew Tompkins; one great-grandchild, Brooklyn.
In addition to her husband, Alvara was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Roberts (2001), and her brother, Peter Volkmann Jr. (2020).
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday January 13th at 9:45am at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peters Church, 185 Hudson View Dr. Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
Burial will follow at St. Peters Cemetery.
