Alverta R. (Reese) Stichter, R.N., 93, a cherished mother, dedicated healthcare professional, and beloved member of the Alburtis and Longswamp Township community, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025 in Willow Brook Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Kutztown. She was the widow of John M. Stichter, Sr., who died on October 26, 2011 and whom she married on January 30, 1954.
Born in Lobachsville, Berks County, PA, Alverta was a daughter of the late William J. Reese and Sadie (Yoder) Bauman. Alverta was a member of Longswamp United Church of Christ and attended Longswamp High School. She graduated from Kutztown Area High School and attended Reading Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated as a Registered Nurse. Alverta continued her education at Wilkes College and The University of Delaware, where she received her Master's of Nursing and was a candidate for her Doctoral degree.
Alverta's career as a Nurse spanned over 50 years. She was employed by The Reading Hospital, Community General Hospital, Osteopathic Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, The Lutheran Home at Topton, and East Penn Manufacturing Co., Inc. Most notably, Alverta was employed by Lehigh Valley Hospital, where she was instrumental in establishing their Neurological Science Department and their Medevac transportation service. She retired from her time at Lehigh Valley as a Vice-President. Alverta also shared her knowledge and passion for nursing by teaching her beloved calling at West Chester University for several years. Alverta's contributions to the field of healthcare were profound, and her commitment to her patients and the community radiated throughout her career. She exemplified the dedication and passion that embody the nursing profession, leaving an indelible mark on those whom she cared for.
Alverta was a member of the Pennsylvania Nursing Association, Longswamp Township Historical Society, where she was a lifetime member. She was an avid reader and enjoyed history and spending time at home, especially being outside mowing her grass, which she was proud to do until age 90. Above all, Alverta loved spending time with her grandchildren, whom she spent many hours taking to horse shows and riding lessons.
Alverta is survived by her two children, John M. Stichter, Jr., companion of Lisa J. (Miller) Geist, and Vicki L. (Stichter), wife of Paul S. Skill, all of Alburtis; three grandchildren, Casey R. Stichter, Shelby L. Stichter and Bryan P., husband of Erin Skill; and two great-grandchildren, Riley and MacKenzie. Along with her husband and parents, Alverta was predeceased by her step-sister, Naomi Reinhard.
