Alvin "Al" Coleman was born and raised in Washington, D.C., one of four children of John and Nannie Coleman. A gifted graphic artist and photographer, Al was a man of many passions and pursuits. An independent thinker, he followed his heart in every endeavor and inspired others to do the same.
Al was a self-taught equestrian who owned and rode horses at various points in his life. He trained a Doberman named Beast and rode his custom Harley Davidson, "The Pink Lady," on road trips with close friends. A lifelong automobile enthusiast, Al started with a Datsun 240Z, later owned two Corvettes, and eventually settled on a BMW. He was also a dedicated bodybuilder who won a competition in 1998 and maintained a commitment to fitness and healthy living throughout his life.
On October 17, 1985, Al married Vicki Coleman and became a devoted dad to Tony Rauch. In his later years, two of Al's greatest joys were table tennis and horseback riding. He and Vicki shared a love of horses and often planned vacations around their riding adventures. Just weeks before his passing, Al lost his cherished horse of 18 years, Viento. True to his resilient spirit, he traveled to Kentucky and bought a new horse, Lexi, only a week before he passed.
Al lived a rich and fulfilling life. He valued family above all and passed on a legacy of faith, discipline, structure, love for nature, hard work, and joy in life's many hobbies and adventures.
He is survived by his loving wife, Vicki Coleman; his son, Tony Rauch, and wife Candice; and his grandsons, Anthony Rauch Jr. and wife Dominique, Camron Rauch, and Christian Rauch. Al was endlessly proud of the man Tony became and deeply honored to be his dad. He found great joy in watching his grandsons grow, always encouraging them to pursue their passions and carry themselves with strength and integrity. Al was also the proud great-grandfather to Kaelyn, Kennedi, and Anthony III ("Tre"). He is remembered with love by his brother, Bruce Coleman; mother-in-law, Lucy Claiborne; sister-in-law, Kathryn Marie Claiborne; and nephew, Daniel Claiborne.
Al leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories, inspiration, and love that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
It was Al's wish that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to The Church of the Atonement's Mercy Fund which is used to support those in need.
