Alvin Hogsett
January 18, 1944 - April 26, 2025
Alvin Grant Hogsett went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 26, 2025. He was born Jan 18, 1944 in Gallup, N.M. to Guy Lloyd and Donna Maxine Hogsett, the last of three sons. In 1948, his family moved to Winslow, AZ where he and his brothers were raised. He graduated from Winslow High School in 1962 and went on to attend Arizona State College in Flagstaff on a music scholarship. While there he met and married the love of his life, Mary Frances Crick on Nov 20, 1965. He graduated from ASC Flagstaff in May, 1966 with a B.S. in Elementary Education.
Shortly after graduation he was inducted into the U.S. Army in Nov, 1966. After attending basic training, OCS prep. Field Artillery Officer Candidate School and Rotary Wing Aviation School he served one tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam as a combat assault helicopter pilot and Air Mission Commander.
During the next 19 years of service he and Mary served in various command and staff positions in the U.S. and Germany. While attending the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1981, he earned his M.A. Degree in Management from Webster University. While at Ft. Rucker, AL, he authored two Army Aviation Field Manuals and was a member of the Project Management team that developed and tested the HELLFIRE missile. After his last tour of duty as Professor of Military Science at Utah State University he and Mary retired and moved back to Flagstaff in Nov, 1988.
His awards and decorations include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, four Meritorious Service Medals, 31 Air Medals, the Army Commendation Medal and the Master Army Aviation Badge.
After moving back to Flagstaff, he worked several different jobs and volunteered in his community as a Van Go driver and member of the Flagstaff Noon Lions Club for 12 years. He was a member of Shepard of the Hills Lutheran church, Grace Fellowship and most recently Victorious Life Christian Center. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, archaeology, coin collecting and making jewelry. He and Mary were full time care givers for his father, mother and handicapped brother from 1998 to 2014.
He was preceded in death by his father; mother; two brothers; and one grandson. He is survived by his wife Mary of years; two daughters Catherine (Niel) and Donna; three grandsons; one granddaughter; eight great grandchildren; and one nephew.
Services will be 10 a.m., Monday June 9th at Presence Community Church, 5200 E Cortland Blvd Ste 14, Flagstaff, AZ 86004 with burial at the VA Cemetery, Bellmont, AZ at 1 p.m. Memories and condolences can be shared with family at www.norvelowensmortuary.com
