In Loving Memory of Alvinia Wilmuth

Alvinia Wilmuth, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, peacefully entered her heavenly home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Good Friday morning, April 18th, at the age of 88. Born on December 8th, 1936, in Quincy, Illinois, she was the beloved first daughter of Alvin and Clytie Calhoun.

Alvinia's early years were filled with laughter and joy as she played with her sisters and cousins in the park where the historic Lincoln-Douglas Debate took place along the banks of the Mississippi River. At the tender age of 10, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior during a Camp Meeting, a decision that would guide her throughout her life. Her love for movies began in childhood, and she became a devoted movie buff, always eager to catch the latest films and relishing the classics throughout her life.

After moving to California in 1952 for her mother's health, Alvinia graduated midterm from San Bernardino High School in 1953. She began her professional journey at Norton Air Force Base, where she excelled as a clerk-steno, eventually serving as secretary to Army Major Gerald King. It was during this time that she met her future husband, James "Jim" Wilmuth, on a blind date in 1956. They married in 1957, embarking on a beautiful journey together that would last 68 years.

As a devoted wife and mother, Alvinia and Jim raised their three children-Jayne, Bob, and Brenda-in a home filled with love and community spirit. She was actively involved in her children's lives, serving as a room mother, Girl Scout Leader, and Den Mother for Boy Scout Cub Pack 39, among many other roles. The family enjoyed a rural life in East Highland, where Alvinia's love for animals flourished, caring for numerous dogs and welcoming wildlife into their yard.

Alvinia's passions extended beyond family; she was an avid bowler, proudly part of the "Fearsome Foursome," and enjoyed many years with her neighborhood Bunco club, affectionately known as "the Broads." Her love for fishing brought her joy, especially during family trips to Big Bear, where she created lasting memories with her loved ones.

In her professional life, Alvinia returned to secretarial work, contributing her skills to various organizations, including the San Bernardino County Road Department and the Sheriff's Department. Her dedication to service was evident in her involvement with the Ladies' Auxiliary to the San Bernardino City Fire Department, where she supported local Marines heading to Vietnam, earning a heartfelt letter of thanks from President Richard Nixon.

Alvinia was also known for her culinary talents, delighting family and friends with her famous chili, cakes, and pies, particularly her beloved German chocolate cake. Her love for dancing brought her joy in the vibrant nightlife of San Bernardino during the 70s, where she enjoyed dancing until the early hours.
As a grandmother, Alvinia embraced her role with warmth and enthusiasm, becoming a chief babysitter and a loving presence in the lives of her grandchildren. She cherished family vacations to San Diego, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and many other beautiful destinations, creating a tapestry of memories that will be treasured forever.

Alvinia was preceded in death by her son Robert "Bob" W. Wilmuth, parents Alvin E. and Clytie J. Calhoun, brothers Alvin L. Calhoun (Mabel), Donald E. Calhoun (Bonnie), and sister C. Aleene Terry.

She is survived by her devoted husband, James Wilmuth; sisters Alice Stinson (Ed) and Arletta McKee (Michael), daughters Jayne (Keith) and Brenda (Michael); grandson Jacob Zylman; granddaughters Kelly O'Grady (Sean), Roxie Barnett, and Cheyenne Barnett; great-grandchildren Riley and Connor O'Grady, and Cali Rose and Beaux Barnett; and many nieces and nephews.

Alvinia was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a devoted wife. Her spirit, kindness, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A celebration of Alvinia's life will be held at Hermosa Cemetery Chapel on Friday, May 16th, at 10:00 AM. Burial to follow at Riverside National Cemetery.
