Alvira Kelly Obituary

ALVIRA MARIE KELLY
August 3, 1921 ˜ November 2, 2023

Alvira Marie Kelly was born Aug. 3, 1921, in a log cabin in Blackduck, MN, to Alvina Mari (Manage) Lindquist and Peter Gustav Lindquist. She was predeceased by four brothers and one sister with her sister Marlys Bancel, still living. Alvira married Glenn Kelly on Aug. 24, 1939, and they raised four sons and one daughter, Michael, Judy, Tim, Dan and Pat. Glenn and Alvira decided to move to Clark County from their little home in Fargo in 1954, when the firehouse was built on 179th Street which also included an attached home. Glenn joined the fire department, and the family moved into the firehouse. In 1961, Alvira became the first volunteer firewoman in Washington state. When the new firehouse was built in Hazel Dell, they moved onto a large property in Salmon Creek where they had upwards of 40 Dalmatians at one time as well as chinchillas, ducks, a turkey and even a monkey for a very short time. Alvira was a devoted member of Salmon Creek United Methodist Church for 60 years. Please consider making a donation to the Clark County Humane Society or Salmon Creek United Methodist Church in Alvira’s memory in lieu of flowers.

I remember meeting the Kelly's in the mid-50's when District 6 station 1 was being built. My dad, Harold Sandstrom was one of the founding commisioners for the district and as a family we were very involved with what was going on with District 6. Glenn was involved in the building process, and Dad was volunteering also. Our families became acquainted through potluck suppers and other district events. Alvira was a busy mom with several children, but had her own part in the fire district. Our families became close enough that we went camping/clam digging at Grays Harbor, and later at Long Beach. By the time Dad passed away in the early 70's I had married and moved from the area and we lost track of one another.

My husband and I cleaned Alvira's apartment at Heatherwood. Alvira was part of a group of spunky ladies that moved out of assisted living in their 90's and lived independently at Heatherwood. She and Cindy became a dear friend to my family. I learned so much more about her in the obituary that I wish that I had known. I think of her often as the little angel she gave me still sits on my bookcase. We visited her once when she went back to Van Mall assisted living but lost track of her over the years. But she is a wonderful woman and we miss her.
