Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral HomeAlyce Porter Haddock passed away at her home in Damascus, Georgia surrounded by her loving children on Saturday, July 26, 2025. She was born on May 17, 1937, in Bainbridge, Georgia. She was educated in the Decatur County School System and graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1955. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Mercer University, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She was a huge sports fanatic, and loved the Atlanta Braves, SEC Football, NCAA Basketball Tournament, Wimbledon, the Olympics, the Kentucky Derby, and anything sports related.
Mrs. Haddock taught seventh grade in Bainbridge, Georgia. She was Red Cross Water Safety instructor and worked at the Bainbridge Recreation Department, teaching many children to swim. She was a dedicated Scouter, and worked with Blue Birds and Campfire Girls, directing day camps and weekend camp outings. She also served as Waterfront Director at Camp Hicita for the Girl Scouts. Mrs. Haddock served on the Chehaw Scout Council and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. She assisted her late husband with the Damascus Boy Scouts and received the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver, one of Scouting's most prestigious awards.
She was a substitute, B-Team softball coach, and assistant Varsity softball coach at Southwest Georgia Academy for many years. She was also founder of the SGA Booster Club and its first President, a member of the PTO and Grandparents Club. She was a mentor for many Damascus children, organizing picnics, trips to the circus, bike-a-thons for various charities, Bible School, and helped them with their homework and speech therapy exercises.
Mrs. Haddock kept the polls in Damascus for many years. She was a member of the Damascus United Methodist Church, where she taught youth and adult Sunday School classes, and held offices in the Leary Charge. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, and held offices in the Thomasville District UMW, including Vice President and a South Georgia Conference Officer. She also spoke at many Methodist churches in the district.
She was a member and past Regent of the Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) and was a member and Chairman of the Early County DFACS Board. In 1983, she was named Co-Board Chairman of the Year for the State of Georgia. She was a charter member of the Early-Miller Citizens Panel.
Mrs. Haddock was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon Smith "Buster" Porter and Alice Carter Porter, and her brother Corporal Carter S. Porter. She was also preceded by her loving husband and best friend of 53 years, William Henry "Hal" Haddock, Jr.
She is survived by a daughter, Porter Haddock Gray (George) of Blakely, GA; sons William Henry “Hank" Haddock, Ill (Lynn) of Damascus, GA and Vernon Smith "Buster" Haddock (Kelly) of Damascus, GA.; a brother, George Porter (Sue) of Cochran, GA; a sister, Phoebe Dorough of Lexington, KY; and her longtime caregiver and best friend, Maria Hanks. Survivors also include her beloved grandchildren, Staff Sargent William Henry Warren (Summer) of Ft. Bragg, NC, Kevin John "KJ" Warren, Jr. of Blakely, GA, Carter Ross Haddock of Damascus, GA; and great-grandchildren Oakley Brynn Warren and Teagan Rowe Warren. She is also survived by step-grandchildren Lee Eppley (Jenna) of Dawson, GA, Danielle Dowdy of Leesburg, GA, Katie Knowles (Trevor) of Freeport, FL, Allen Gray (Lindsay) of Blakely, GA; and three step-great-grandchildren, Paxton Eppley, London Eppley, Haddock Ann Dowdy, Nora Betts Knowles, Lucy Knowles, George Gray IV, and Philip Gray.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Manry-Jordan Hodges Funeral Home, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A Graveside Service will be held Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at Pine Lawn Gardens Cemetery in Blakely, Georgia, with Rev. Jean Watson officiating. Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
