Dr. Amelito P. Canlas

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Amelito P. Canlas, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated medical professional, who left this world on February 17, 2026, at the age of 79. Born in the Philippines, Amelito proudly embraced life as a Filipino American and served his community with unparalleled dedication.

Amelito (Mel) is survived by his devoted wife, Dr. Anselma (Ann) Canlas, and their children: Dr. Christopher Canlas, Dr. Melissa Canlas and her husband Ben VonZastrow, Melanie Papa and her husband Louis, and Lauren Viray and her husband Benjamin, and Amelito"s sister, Rita Cabatac and her husband Nelson and their son Francis. Mel was the devoted grandfather to Christian, Max, Alessandra, Lorenzo, and Gabriella. Mel"s legacy lives on through his family, who will remember him as a dedicated father and husband and doting lolo.

Mel's commitment to the medical field was evident in his decades of service at Harford Memorial Hospital and as a partner in Sadowsky Surgical Associates, with his colleague Dr. Jun Carag. He was also a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons and had the honor of serving as the President of the Harford County Medical Society, Chief of Surgery at Harford Memorial Hospital, and member of the Board of Directors of Upper Chesapeake Health Center. Beyond these positions, he took great pride in the relationships he created with his staff, colleagues, patients, and their families. His commitment to healing and helping others was matched only by his love for his family.

Outside of his medical career, Mel was an active member of the Filipino American Association of Upper Chesapeake and a beloved member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, where he lent his voice and guitar to the church choir for decades. He was a talented self-taught guitar player and an enthusiastic do-it-yourself-er who was happy to share his skills, in everything from woodworking to car repair, with friends and community members. His music, creativity, and generosity will be dearly missed.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Mel"s life and legacy during the upcoming services. There will be a public viewing at Zellman Funeral Home, on February 27, 2026, from 2:00-4:00 PM, and 6:00-8:00 PM. A mass in his honor will be held at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church on February 28, 2026, at 1:00 PM.

In this time of grief, we cherish the memory of Mel Canlas. His family is deeply grateful for all of those who have supported Mel throughout the years, and who continue to support the family in these challenging times. Mel leaves behind a legacy of compassion, service, and love that will forever be remembered.
