Amparo "Amy" Morado Mathews, 77, of
Phoenix, Arizona, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025, after a long and courageous seven-year battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Amy was born in Santa Maria, Texas, to Jose and Hortencia Morado. She attended college and went on to build a rewarding career with AT&T, where she dedicated 33 years before retiring. A devout Christian, Amy's faith was the foundation of her life. She loved her Lord deeply and lived each day reflecting His love through her actions, kindness, and strength.
Amy was full of life and laughter. She had a wonderful sense of humor that could brighten any room and a heart that overflowed with compassion. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and caretaker who lovingly cared for her own mother and her grandchildren with patience and joy. Her love for flowers, chocolate, gardening, shopping, the Arizona Cardinals, and hosting family celebrations made every day with her vibrant and memorable.
In 2018, Amy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, a cruel illness that slowly takes memories but can never erase love. She faced this disease with grace and courage, surrounded by unwavering care from her husband, Phil, and her children, Melissa and Randy. They devoted themselves to her care every day, ensuring she remained safe, loved, and comforted through every stage of her journey. Their commitment reflects the deep family bond Amy instilled in them from the beginning.
Amy's family hopes her story serves as a reminder of the devastating toll Alzheimer's takes not only on those who live with it but also on the families who walk beside them. May her memory inspire compassion, awareness, and continued efforts toward research and support for those affected by this disease.
She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Phil Mathews; her daughter, Melissa Dowrick; her son, Randy Mathews; her brothers Armando, Alvaro, Alonzo and Abel and sisters Aurora, Alicia, Adriana, predeceased by siblings Jose, Guadalupe, Zulema, Arnulfo and Antonio; her grandchildren, Selene Petersen, Jacob Petersen, Faith Perez, Santiago Leyva, and Heaven Mathews; and her great-grandchildren, Alexander Gonzalez, Alliyana Gonzalez, Giuliana Perez, and Marco Gonzalez. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Hortencia Morado, and her brothers, Tony and Arnulfo Morado
Amy's warmth, humor, and faith-filled heart will live on in the countless lives she touched. Her family takes comfort in knowing she now rests in the eternal peace she so faithfully believed in.
"We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord". The full passage, often paraphrased as "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord".
