Anabel Ratcliff Jones passed away on May 2, 2025, at the age of 91 inCambridge, Massachusetts. Born on September 6, 1933, in Lafayette, Indiana, Anabel dedicated her life to medicine and her love of music.
Anabel graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1951. She then attended Indiana University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 1955 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1959, followed by her residency in Anesthesiology. Anabel served as a respected anesthesiologist in Lafayette for over 30 years.
During her youth she lived briefly in New Orleans, where her father was a physician at an Army hospital during the Second World War.
She then returned to Indiana where she met her first husband Lindley Wagner during medical school at Indiana University. After moving to Lafayette to practice medicine, she was a singer with the Lafayette Bach Chorale Singers and in productions at the Lafayette Civic Theater.
She was later married to Wiley Jones for 41 years, whom she met at Trinity United Methodist church in Lafayette. Anabel & Wiley were active church members throughout their lives, where Anabel was a regular member of the church choir.
Anabel & Wiley were also active in the Meals on Wheels program, delivering meals to fellow Lafayette residents for many years. They were avid sports enthusiasts, attending many Purdue and Indiana University basketball and football games over the years. Anabel & Wiley shared a love for travel, having visited all 50 states and six continents. They enjoyed boating, motorhome travels, and attending the Indianapolis 500.
Her love for animals was evident in her affection for dogs and her support for the Humane Society. Anabel also found joy in playing bridge with her close-knit group of friends who met regularly for lunch get-togethers throughout their lives.
Anabel is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary Ratcliff, her husband Wiley Jones and daughter, LuAnn Jones.
She is survived by her sons Warren Wagner and his wife Allison Lynch of Arlington Massachusetts, Lynn Jones and his wife Susan of Birmingham Alabama, grand children Taylor Jones and his wife Hannah of Orlando Florida and Lauren Jones of Birmingham, Alabama, great grandchildren August Jones and Eleanor Jones, and her dog Pedro.
Services to honor Anabels life will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lafayette, Indiana, on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Frank W. and Mary Holt Ratcliff Scholarship Fund at the IU School of Medicine, Trinity United Methodist Church in Lafayette, or the Humane Society for Greater Lafayette. Donations to the scholarship fund should be made payable to the Indiana University Foundation, indicating the scholarship funds name in the memo section, and mailed to P.O.
