Andrew E. Eilers ObituaryAndrew E. Eilers age 78. Beloved son of the late Eugene and Loretta (nee Pawlak) Eilers. Loving companion of Ellen Isaacson for over 40 years. Dearest brother of Michael (Nancy) Eilers, Monica (late Thomas) Kilian, Mary Rose (John) Zawislak, Ronald (Joan) Eilers, Nicholas (Julie) Eilers, Rita (late Donald) Davis, the late Bonita Eilers, Patrick Eilers and Jerome (Joy) Eilers. Fond uncle and great uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Andy had a very energetic childhood, much to his mother's chagrin, which included bringing home snakes and frogs and letting them escape somewhere in the house. However, he was also "Outstanding Newspaper Boy" in 1960. He even used his paperboy salary to buy a new bike. He was educated in the Catholic schools in Muskegon but decided after graduation that he did not want to work in the factories there so when he heard about a technical program in Chicago that would train him to be a tool and die maker, he jumped at the chance. He was in that trade until 1984, with a brief hiatus in the US Army from 1969 to 1971. Then after going to school part time using the GI Bill, he graduated from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1984 and decided to put his electrical engineering degree to good use. It was on to Underwriters Laboratories where he worked with the group evaluating gas pumps used in gas stations. That was not all he worked on but that's what he used to talk about the most. Being a devoted brother and uncle, Andy always made sure he traveled back to Michigan for family events, including braving treacherous snowstorms in order to show up for Thanksgiving and Christmas family parties.
Andy was never all work and no play. He took up skiing for fun and did ski trips with the boys until the oil embargo in 1973. After that he was looking for a ski club and became an active member of Chicago Friars Ski Club for the rest of his life. He also liked running, weight training, cross-country skiing, swimming, tennis, camping and a lot of walking, mostly after his hip surgeries and retirement.
