Andrew Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thurston Rowe Funeral Home on Mar. 6, 2026.
Andrew "Andy" Patrick Smith

Andrew "Andy" Patrick Smith, 56, of Litchfield, Connecticut, passed away at his home on March 3, 2026.

Andy was born on January 8, 1970, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He graduated from Wamogo High School in Litchfield, Connecticut, as part of the Class of 1988.

After high school, Andy moved to California where he began an adventurous chapter of his life. In the early 1990s, after first arriving in Santa Barbara, he worked as a fisherman aboard the Lady Olga. He later traveled to Alaska during the salmon run, where he spent time fishing and exploring the rugged outdoors. During one memorable adventure, he had a close encounter with a brown bear while riding his bike through the area - a story he would recount for years.

Andy later dedicated himself to a career in emergency services. He first worked as an EMT before becoming a paramedic. He earned his associate's degree in Fire Science and went on to work for the City of Emeryville, California, outside of Oakland. Andy was a highly valued and respected member of the Emeryville Fire Department and was often sought out during intense situations for his experience, calm presence, and judgment.

Andy had many passions. He was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees and an avid reader of all things sports. He loved all kinds of music, particularly the Grateful Dead. He enjoyed being outdoors, and he had a special love for dogs. An avid foodie, Andy loved cooking and sharing meals with others. He followed the news closely and enjoyed discussing and debating current events with anyone willing to sit down and talk.

Most of all, Andy loved his children and was immensely proud of them.

He is survived by his children, Rubey Grace Smith and Noah Patrick Smith, and their mother, Jennifer Carey; his mother, Sally Smith of Litchfield, Connecticut; his sisters, Shellie (Smith) and Michael Urso of Berlin, Connecticut; Terri (Smith) and Mike Gilroy of Sudbury, Massachusetts; Heather (Smith) and Chris Martin of Paris, Kentucky; and Kelley (Smith) and Matt Carey of Glastonbury, Connecticut; as well as many nieces and nephews. Andy will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South Street, Litchfield, Connecticut, on Monday, March 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
