Born in the winter of 1934 in the tiny village of Brusago, Pine' near Trento, Italy, our mother was given the name Anetta by the priest that baptized her. Her mother however, prefered to call her Eni. Later her friends and relatives in America would call her Anna. To myself, my sister and my brother she was Mamma, to her nieces and nephews she was Zia, and to her many beloved grandchildren, she was Nonna.
She lived a very simple, sheltered life as a young woman in the mountains of northern Italy, albeit a hard life with little money and the constant hard work that goes with maintaining a small family farm. It wasn't until the mid-1960's when a young man named Sergio was accompanying his mother as she went to buy some fresh cuts of meat from Anetta's father who operated a small butcher shop in the village, that her dream and her destiny was about to be realized. A few short months later, Anetta and Sergio were married.
The opportunity to realize her dream of starting a family of her own was enough to give her the courage to leave her beloved mother, father and brothers and the only life she had ever known, and travel by herself, across a vast and frightening ocean to the distant and unfamiliar land of America, specifically a place called Denver, Colorado where her just wedded husband was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his new bride.
Soon, the young bride from Italy was blessed with three children and a home of her own. Her dream fulfilled, she continued to live out each day with a profound sense of gratitude, caring for and nurturing her family with a fierce love and devotion seldom seen in the world today. She often expressed her love for others with her love of food and cooking. She could not bear to see anyone friend or stranger, human or animal not fed properly. She never hesitated to offer a sample of her delicious Italian cooking to any and all that came to visit her.
Everything entrusted to her care seemed to blossom and thrive, whether it was the many children she babysat over the years, or her cherished vegetable and flower gardens, or her precious pet canary, Nino. Yet all the while, she never lost her ability to see the world around her with a childlike sense of wonder and awe. Hers was a beautiful and pure soul.
My brother, sister and I will forever be grateful for all that our mother gave us and taught us. Through her, we've been blessed with the rich culture and traditions of our Tyrolean-Italian heritage. She taught us to speak the beautiful language of her homeland, how to forage the wild mushrooms of the forest, and most of all she taught us the supreme value of faith and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Sergio, her mother Maria, her father Agostino, and her brothers, Giacobbe, Armando, and Adelio.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Rino (Starr), Dina (Darrin), and Franco (Ilene), and by her grandchildren, Olivia, Valerie, Dimitri, Alissa, Naomi, Gianna, Louis, Maria, Joseph, Dominic, Siobahn (Israel), Sergio, Stefano, and her great-grandchildren, Arturo and Adeline.
Addio carissima Mamma, Zia, and Nonna. May the Lord receive you and keep you in His tender care. We will forever love you and miss you until we see you again in the life everlasting.
