Obituary- Angel J. Quirino

Angel J. Quirino, 77, passed away in his home on January 5, 2024. He was born on August 3, 1946, in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and was raised in Laredo, Mexico. He eventually moved to San Antonio to reunite with his family when he was 15 years of age.

Angel was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was married to the love of his life, Juanita, for 53 years until her death in June 2022. Angel and Juanita were blessed with three children, Angel Quirino, Jr., Sonia Quirino Canales (Michael Canales), and Maritza Quirino. He is survived by his grandchildren Araceli Sol Barrera, Olivia Belén Canales, Joseph Canales, Joshua Canales, Alexandra Hernandez, Graison Hernandez and numerous great grandchildren. He is also survived by his nieces, nephew and brothers. He is preceded in death by his parents Gonzalo Quirino and Raymunda J. Espinosa as well as his sister Consuelo Baiza and brothers Calixto and Ignacio Quirino.

Angel worked in construction for 48 years and was a master tradesman-tape and float/drywall. He took great pride in his work on projects throughout San Antonio including the San Antonio Central Public Library, UTSA downtown, the Grand Hyatt, and other landmark hotels, and numerous subdivisions including the Dominion. He also worked hard to support his wife’s dream of having her own flower shop and was often spotted on a flower delivery. Angel was a composer of music. He had the honor of being selected by the Archdiocese of San Antonio to have one of his compositions “Cristo Rey” included in a special mass at San Fernando Cathedral. Angel was a member of Mariachi Gala and played the guitar and vihuela. Together with his wife and daughter and other musicians whom he loved, he joyfully entertained families with mariachi music for all occasions.

Angel was a longtime and faithful parishioner of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church for 55 years. He served his parish in music ministry for many years, not only serving during the Sunday masses, but also for countless weddings, funerals, rosaries and quinceañeras. He was a Guadalupano, served on the pastoral council and volunteered at the parish festival year after year. Angel also served in leadership in the St. Mary Magdalen Grupo de Oracion. Early on, he connected with the charismatic movement in San Antonio to bring special guest speakers and priests to St. Mary Magdalen and he created the first Men’s Retreat.

Angel had a good sense of humor, a big heart, a warm smile and was very loving and kind. He will be greatly missed.
