Howard Maurice Popeil, 94, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2025. Born on April 3, 1931, in the Bronx, New York, Howard lived a long, rich life defined by devotion, integrity, sharp wit, and a remarkable dedication to those he loved. Howard grew up in the Bronx and graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School, where his gift for numbers and quick mind were already evident. He went on to serve honorably in the United States Marine Corps, stationed at Opa Locka, Florida-a posting that sparked his lifelong fondness for South Florida, the place that would eventually become his home.
In the 1960s, Howard became a successful entrepreneur, opening several employment agencies in Hempstead, New York. Each location thrived under his sharp intelligence, tireless work ethic, and extraordinary attention to detail. In 1974, he moved with his family to South Florida, where he worked as a bookkeeper and accountant for Emerald Hills Country Club in Hollywood. He later retired early so he could devote himself fully to caring for his mother-in-law, exemplifying his deep sense of duty and compassion.
Howard was determined, fiercely independent, and gifted with a brilliant mind-especially when it came to numbers. He had an uncanny ability to calculate anything in his head, and he maintained a perfectly balanced checkbook well into his nineties.
Howard enjoyed a lifelong love of sports and activity. As a young man, he played handball; later, he transitioned to racquetball and then became an enthusiastic tennis player, continuing to play several times a week until age 85. He loved attending New York Mets and Jets games with friends and family, and he proudly witnessed the Mets' historic victory at the final game of the 1969 World Series. He remained an avid follower of NFL football and NBA basketball throughout his life.
One of Howard's greatest joys was traveling the world with his beloved wife, Carole Belle Popeil, with whom he shared 70 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they explored many countries across Europe, enjoying tours, cruises, and unforgettable adventures. In the final years of Carole's life, Howard became her devoted caregiver, providing her with steadfast love, patience, and comfort-a profound reflection of the depth of their partnership.
Howard was a loving father to: Larry (Kathy) Popeil, Linda (John) England, and Randi (Greg) Knightes. He was a proud and cherished grandfather to: Jared (Megan) Popeil, Jennifer (Ryan) Oistacher, Katie Popeil, Alex Popeil, Jonathan (Joanna) England, Sarah England, Jessica (Nicholas) Glick, Andrew Knightes, Timothy Knightes, and Tyler Knightes.
His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Ellie, Jonah, Evangeline, Jameson, Jane, and Julia.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Anna Popeil, and by his beloved wife, Carole, who passed in May 2025. He is survived by his brother, Stanley (Paula) Popeil.
Howard's life was marked by loyalty, love, humor, and a deep commitment to family. His determination, sharp intellect, and warm presence will be remembered always.
