Anita Lorraine Fairweather, 93, a long-time resident of Newton, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of artistry, movement, and love. Born in Nyack, New York, in 1932 to Charles and Greta McKie, Anita lived a life marked by creativity, curiosity, and deep connection.

Anita's lifelong passion for the arts took root early and blossomed during her studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she met her first husband, Walter Lorraine. In the vibrant Boston dance scene of the 1950s, Anita found her rhythm--not only as a dancer but as a visionary teacher. In the 1960s, she began teaching creative dance to children, pioneering approaches that emphasized imagination, freedom, and joy in movement, that later led to teaching positions at Garland Junior College and Simmons College (now Simmons University). A dedicated mother and keen documentarian of family life, she also pursued interests in photography and film as well as outdoor adventure and global travel.

Anita married Bill Fairweather, with whom she shared 27 years of companionship--and a mutual devotion to their beloved cats--until his passing in 2024. She was predeceased by her brother, Ronald McKie, and is survived by her children: Marc and his wife Claire, Tamsin, Shawn and her partner Bruce, and Wendy and her husband Neal; her grandchildren, Henry, Bennett, Kincaid, and Kira; and numerous great-grandchildren. Anita's adventurous spirit and creative spark will live on in those she inspired.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the animal charity of your choice.
