Ann Hagood Martin Barlow, age 98, died on September 25, 2025 at The Forest at Duke. She was born November 5, 1926, the third but only surviving daughter of Edgar Charles Martin and Essie Hagood Martin of Easley, South Carolina. After finishing public school there, she attended Agnes Scott College for two years, then graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, B.A. (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1947 and M. A. In 1949.

Her career as an English teacher began at Delta State College in Cleveland, Mississippi, and continued at Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1952, she married Norman Howard Barlow of London, England, whom she had met during a summer session at the University of London. During their 32-year marriage Norman taught French at Duke University and Ann taught English at Durham Academy (for fourteen years). Both Ann and Norman were founding and active members of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where Ann served on the Vestry, the St. Stephen's Foundation and sang in the choir for 25 years.

Ann was a member of the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties, the Halcyon Club and the Book Club. After her husband's death in 1985, she volunteered for 22 years with the Duke Cancer Patient Support Program and at Caring House-both from the initial organization of each program. She also participated in several research projects at Duke Medical Center.

Survivors include her daughter, Kate Cadwallader and her husband Robb; her daughter in law, Vicky Fuller; her five granddaughters, Laura Porkert (Markus), Jessica Milliken (Alex), Carrie Milliken (Nicholas), Liza and Lexie Barlow; and her great grandson, Nolan Porkert. She was predeceased by her son Howard Barlow, Jr. In addition, there are numerous much loved Barlow and Wood relatives in England.

A memorial service and reception will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 82 Kimberly Drive, Durham, NC, 27707 on Saturday, October 18, at 11 a.m.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Caring House (2625 Pickett Rd, Durham, NC 27705), or Durham Academy Scholarship Fund (3601 Ridge Rd, Durham, NC 27705).

The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. in Durham. Online condolences may be sent to www.clementsfuneralservice.com.
