Ann H. Belonga
Died May 13, 2023
St. IGNACE – Ann Helene (MacDonald) Belonga, 89, of St. Ignace passed away Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Medilodge of Leelanau with family by her side.
Ann was born July 27, 1933, in St. Ignace, Michigan, the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth (Bailey) MacDonald. On September 5, 1953 in St. Ignace, she married Robert F. Belonga who preceded her in death in 2020.
Ann was always very active in her community. Her first job was at the Indian Village, and she was very proud of that. She also worked at the First National Bank. After Ann and Bob were married, she assisted Bob with the startup of Belonga Plumbing and devoted many years to both the company and raising her children. After her children were grown, she went to work for the Ojibwa Museum and was proud to manage the store's bookkeeping and meet folks coming to the museum. Ann was very active in The Saint Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, being part of St. Ann's Alter Society, pre-marriage counseling, and assisting others with joining the church. She was also an educator for the CCD classes and taught the area children for many years.
Ann was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and her and Bob could be seen many days searching the great lakes for stranded boaters. Together they had a combined 69 years with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. They toured the coasts of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, taking trips every summer in the Triton, a 23.5' Slickcraft.
Ann was a proud grandmother and great grandmother! She always made sure she got cards out to everyone for their Birthdays, anniversaries and holidays!
Ann is survived by her children, Sherry Kizer, William Belonga, James (Cory) Belonga, Catherine Fenlon, her siblings, Richard MacDonald, John "Butch" (Lee) MacDonald; her grandchildren, Erik Kizer, Kristina (Brandon) Underwood, Justin (Alaina) Emery, Alex (Samantha) Belonga, Chase Belonga, Andrew (Miroslava) Belonga, Robert Belonga, David (Ruth) Fenlon, Brian (Chelsea) Fenlon, Katie (Nate Haikkila) Fenlon; and her great grandchildren, Lillian, Elizabeth and Hewitt Underwood, Tyler Emery, Margo, Marion, Marley and Gideon Belonga.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert, a sister in law, Verta MacDonald, a daughter, Lisa Emery, and a son in law, John Fenlon.
Visitation prior to the service will be July 29th, 2023, at 10:00 am and Mass will be held at 11:00 am at St. Ignatious Loyola Church of St. Ignace. Father Francis J. Ricca will serve as celebrant. Burial will immediately follow at the Catholic cemetery and a luncheon and Celebration of Life will be held at Bob and Ann's Huron Street home from 1-4pm. The community is welcome to come and celebrate the life of Ann with her family.
