She wanted to be called "Ann."
Mary Ann Cheevers (nee Weisenberger) passed away peacefully on October 6, 2024, at the age of 95 following a very short stay in Hospice care. She is survived by her two children, Thomas Cheevers (Tom), John Cheevers and wife Ellen, and Bonnie Vance her stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and many great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.
Ann was born at home on 24 June, 1929 in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, to Peter and Margaret Weisenberger. She had two older brothers, Pete and Bill. Pete always called her Suzie, but I'm not sure if Bill did. She graduated high school from Notre Dame Academy in 1947 and worked for a time at the Institutum Divi Thomae and then for an insurance company. In 1954 she married Thomas Cheevers and settled in Highland Heights, Kentucky to raise the family. The house they bought in 1954 was her home until the end.
In the early 1970s she decided to attend Northern Kentucky University graduating Cum Laude in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in anthropology.
She loved to laugh, and her two sons knew how to make her laugh. We would gang up on the jokes and antics and get her into laughing fits until she had tears. I remember the crazy trip we took to Mexico that didn't get past Memphis, Tennessee. The car broke down a few miles outside of Memphis. The car was towed to a dealership to be repaired, and we spent several days at a local motel enjoying the pool and making friends with other kids there. After repairs, continuing to Mexico was out so we spent a few days touring sites in Kentucky like Mammoth Cave. Somewhere along the way home we stopped at a hotel that featured a family style chicken dinner. During dinner, mom's back went out and she couldn't drive the stick shift. Luckily, my brother had his learner's permit and could bring us home. So here was mom in pain trying to walk bent over from the restaurant while her two sons were trying make her laugh. And we did-sorry mom.
She loved to travel and explore places and things-she traveled far and wide. She would arrive somewhere and stay away from the touristy and familiar things preferring to meet people and experience the local culture and way of life. It's amazing to find that she made so many friends and acquaintances. It seems that she knew everyone.
Mom was a devout Catholic and member of St. Joseph's Church and Parish. She prayed the rosary daily and sang in the St. Joseph Resurrection Choir. She was a member of the St. Mary's Ladies Society. Due to her declining health, she became home-bound but looked forward to visits from family and friends. But I think the visits from the Monsignor, priests, and church Deacons were more important helping her with her spiritual well-being.
Visitation will be held on October 16, 2024 at the Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, 427 S. Fort Thomas Ave.
Fort Thomas, Ky from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, Mass of Christian Burial will be on October 17, 2024 at 10:30am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 4011 Alexandria Pk. Cold Spring, Ky. Ann will be laid to rest at St. Stephen Cemetery,
Fort Thomas, Ky.
