Ann Horner Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 15, 2026.
Ann Mary Horner (nee Weiss), passed away peacefully at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore on January 19, 2026. She was 96 years old, beloved mother of Ruth Ann Horner, John E. Horner and his wife, Beverly; devoted grandmother of Nicole Horner, Jonathan T. Horner and his wife, Lexi; and loving great grandmother of Josie and Sylvie Horner. She leaves behind two brothers, John C. Weiss, Jr. and Walter J. Weiss and many nieces and nephews. Her sister, Eleanor Smink, preceded her in death.

A Baltimore-area native, Ann will be remembered for her dedication to community service and love for socializing with family and friends. Graduating from Western High School, class of 1947, she served in various class leadership positions. Her brother, John, remembers her organizing a group to "meet boys", holding record hop parties with her friends once a month. Ann was a top student and received a recommendation for a scholarship to attend Johns Hopkins University. She never told her parents because she knew she was not expected to go to college. However, Ann would persevere and rise through the ranks of the computer training program for the Social Security Administration, earning an associate's degree while working. She retired in 1989, but she continued to hone her technical skills into her nineties.

She left the Social Security Administration for a brief period to raise her children. During this time, she drove a school bus for Baltimore County Public Schools. She was active as a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout Leader and served in many capacities at St. Thomas Episcopal Church as a counter, member of the Altar Guild, and managed the Nearly New Room at the Christmas Bazaar.

Ann was an active member of Parents Without Partners, attending a luncheon a few days before she passed. She served as Newsletter Director responsible for documenting club activities and Baltimore-area chapters' events. The monthly publication went out to more than a thousand members. She worked with the Community Services committee organizing monthly visits to nursing homes, playing cards and attending dances and dinners.

In retirement, Ann continued her various social engagements and community activities. She never missed an opportunity to play Bridge with different groups several times a week. When she no longer felt comfortable driving herself, she would take an Uber. She and her partner, Marck Mulligan, volunteered as ushers for theaters around Baltimore, including the Hippodrome, Morris A. Mechanic Theatre, Cockpit in Court and Baltimore Center Stage. She loved going on trips and sharing quality time with her grandchildren, Nicole and Jonathan.

She moved to an apartment at Oak Crest Senior Living Community in Parkville in 2021, facing health challenges, which she survived, but left her unable to walk. Her full-time aide, Fefe, became a close companion, making sure Ann continued doing the things she loved, such as attending music concerts and playing cards. Ann enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially her brother, Walter, who visited frequently and offered encouragement.

A memorial service will be held for Ann on March 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Oak Crest Chapel, 8820 Walther Boulevard, Parkville, Maryland 21234. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
