Ann Moore Obituary

Stonington - Ann Goldthwaite Moore, 84, of Stonington, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, at Westerly Hospital after a brief stay.

Ann was born in New London, to Ella and Eaton Kenneth Goldthwaite. She grew up in Mystic, attended Williams Memorial Institute and went on to Barnard College. While in New York, she met her future husband, Edward Charles Moore (d. 2005). She and Ed settled in Stonington Borough and had two daughters, Jennifer Ann Moore of New London and Nell Moore Chevalier of Stonington.

Ann received her B.A. from Connecticut College in 1970. She was a secondary science teacher in the Westerly school department for ten years before working as a home health aide with the Visiting Nurse Association of Southeastern Connecticut for several years.

In 2006, following the death of Edward, Ann found pleasure in her ministry as a volunteer at York Correctional Institute in Niantic, volunteering at the New London Community Meal Center, and writing poetry which she shared with friends and family.

Ann's life changed in 2007 at a retreat with Vietnamese Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. Through her studies, she met Joanne Friday (d. 2021) who became her beloved teacher. The most powerful lesson she received from her was that of self-acceptance, together with hugging meditation. In 2011, Ann was ordained into Thich Nhat Hanh's Order of Interbeing, and in 2017, began facilitating Accepting Heart Sangha (a community of mindfulness practitioners) in her home.

Ann was known for her intelligence, wit and strength. She was a woman who left a long-standing impression on everyone she met.

In addition to her daughters, Ann leaves behind son-in-law Chris Chevalier; grandsons, Christopher Edward Chevalier of Groton and Daniel Eaton Chevalier of Burlington, Vt.; as well as many beloved half-siblings, step-siblings, cherished friends and members of her Sangha family.

A memorial service for Ann will be arranged for mid-March. Details to follow. Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, Westerly is in care of the arrangements. For online condolences please visit www.gaffneydolanfuneralhome.com.

Ann and I have been friends for over 35 years. She taught my granddaughter while at Westerly High, led me in an exercise class, I learned so much from her during our 9 years in a Sangha meditation program. A dear friend forever

Mary Ann, may you continue beautifully into the future through your children and their children and through everyone you have touched in your exemplary life of dedication to the goodness in all. We never met, but we are Dharma sisters. Condolences to your beloved ones. You, surely, have not left them.

I met Ann in 2008 at Joanne and Richard Friday´s home during a Sunday Clear Heart Sangha gathering in Matunuck, RI. Through my eyes, Ann and Joanne were the matriarches of the community. Ann and I connected right away. She made me a better listener and she taught me how to hug, really hug. Which is saying a lot because I come from a family of huggers!
Ann, Richard and I would go for walks in Stonington. Cherry blossoms were in bloom, the last time we went for a stroll. We would enjoy lunch at the local Mexican restaurant.
We were occasional penpals.
Ann made this world a better place.
Thank you for sharing yourself dear sweet Ann.
