Judith Acker Obituary

Judith Acker
Judith (Judy) Hartt Acker, the daughter of the late Roger and Florence Hartt, died on February 6, 2026. She was born January 9, 1936 in Manchester and lived in Hamden and Watertown before the family settled in Fairfield when she was in the fourth grade. She attended Roger Sherman School and graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School in 1953 and Connecticut College in 1957. She later earned her MA in elementary education from the University of Bridgeport. Judy began her teaching career at the Noah Wallace School in Farmington and after four years joined the faculty at The Duffy School in West Hartford. While there she met her future husband, Alfred W. Acker, Jr. They were married in July 1963 and settled in Fairfield to be closer to Al's work in Stamford as a CPA. Judy then taught for one more year at Oldfield School before becoming a stay-at-home mom and volunteer.
Her volunteer work included Trinity Church, Southport, and whatever school her children were in, serving as PTA president on several occasions. She also served as co-chair of the High School Consolidation Committee in Fairfield. Following Al's retirement in 1992, Al and Judy winterized and renovated what had been since 1939 the Acker family beach cottage in Niantic, CT. Judy continued to volunteer in various ways at St. John's Episcopal Church, especially as a member of the choir and a lay reader, and as secretary of the Oak Grove Beach Association. Judy also volunteered in many ways for Connecticut College, serving as reunion chair and class president on several occasions, for seven years on the college Alumni Board, on the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, and as a class gift officer. Judy recently became a volunteer with Child and Family.
Al and Judy enjoyed playing golf at The Patterson Club in Fairfield and at Black Hall Club in Old Lyme. She served as chair of the Women's Associations at both clubs. Travels to Dixieland festivals and two months each winter in Bonita Springs, Florida were part of their routine for many years. Judy also enjoyed duplicate bridge and was a member of the American Association of University Women in both the Bridgeport and New London branches.
Judy is survived by her two sons and their families: Bruce, his wife Elaine, and children Kevin and Lindsay of Williamsville, NY, and Jeff, his wife, Lara, and their children Emily, Ben, Jake, Dennis and Jasmine of Hanover, NH. She is also survived by her sister Barbara and her husband Bill of Plymouth MN, and her brother David and his wife Diane of Chicago, nine nieces and nephews and 18 great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Judy was predeceased by her husband Al, after a wonderful marriage of 55 years, and by her brother and sister-in-law Russell and Kay Hartt.
The funeral will be at St. John's Church, Main St., Niantic on Saturday, March 28, at 11:00 a.m. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Church, 400 Main St Niantic, CT 06357 or to The Annual Fund, Class of 1957, Connecticut College, 270 Mohegan Ave., New London, CT 06320.
