Erickson-Hansen Funeral HomeHazel Stenquist Dahl, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Hazel was born in Bridgeport, CT on July 3, 1931 to Carl Eric and Ethel Stenquist. She graduated from Bassick High School in Bridgeport and earned an Associate’s Degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Bridgeport.
She met her husband, Elmer, when they were teenagers on the hilltop of the Covenant youth camp in Cromwell, CT. They married on June 9, 1956. Hazel and Elmer settled in Simsbury, CT where they raised their children and lived for nearly 50 years, before moving to Cromwell in 2016.
Hazel was a devoted wife and mother. As her children grew, she began a 30-year career as a special education teacher assistant in the Simsbury school system. Her compassion, patience and dedication to her students made this a happy and fulfilling career.
Hazel was a person of strong faith. She had a joyful spirit and positive outlook that she carried with her throughout her life. She served in her church as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and fellowship volunteer. In retirement, she and Elmer were members of the Farmington Valley Chorale. She was an avid book reader and loved to share book recommendations. Elmer and Hazel enjoyed travel with friends and family, particularly visiting their children and grandchildren whenever possible.
Hazel is survived by her four children, James Dahl of Westbrook, CT; Peter Dahl (Kelley) of Poquoson, VA, Sara Pihl (Greg) of Simsbury, CT and Steven Dahl (Julie) of Naperville, IL.; her grandchildren Elizabeth (Jake), Daniel (Kirsten), Eric (fiancée, Lauren) , Matthew, Emily (fiancée Michael), Christopher, Nate, Griffin, Thomas and Katherine; great-grandchildren Henry and August; her twin sister, Claire Forstrom and brother John Stenquist (Linda). She was pre-deceased by her husband of nearly 66 years, Elmer and daughter-in-law, Kristen.
A memorial service will be held at Covenant Living of Cromwell on March 14, 2026 at 2:00 pm. A private burial service will take place at Simsbury Cemetery.
Donations may be made in her memory to Bethany Covenant Church, 785 Mill St., Berlin, CT 06037 or the Benevolent Fund of Covenant Living of Cromwell, 101 West St., Cromwell, CT 06416.
