Ann Stred Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hall Funeral Homes & Cremation Services - Waldoboro on Mar. 18, 2026.
Delphina Ann Norwood Stred (Ann) died peacefully on March 15, 2026, in Owls Head, Maine. She was born in Warren, Maine, the daughter of Leroy Hastings Norwood and Avis Newman Norwood. Ann grew up in and spent most of her life in Warren, Maine.

Ann was a 1943 graduate of Warren High School and a 1946 graduate of Colby College, graduating in 3 years and majoring in French. It is thought that she hurried through college in order to take part in the war effort, but the war had ended by the time she graduated. After college, Ann taught school in Sangerville and Union, Maine. On one summer break she drove across country with sister Lois and friend Edith Freeman in order to see the states and visit with cousin Adelbert (Red) Norwood who was playing minor league baseball in California.

That same year, Ann had taken a break from teaching and had gone to Florida to work at the Hollywood Beach Hotel with her friend Ethel Wotton. There she met a charming and handsome Coast Guard veteran named Harry Stred, Jr. They were married in Warren in 1950. Harry was recalled into U.S. Navy service due to the Korean War, so they started their life together in Pensacola, Florida. In 1951, Harry finished his service, and the young couple moved back to Warren, Maine in time for the birth of their first child.

Ann loved her family, her town, her church, and the quiet-yet-busy life that she chose. A beloved nephew has said, "Ann was one of the sharpest and kindest people I've known."

She never said "no" to quietly being there for her kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews. She gave financial support, carpooling support, music lessons support, and summertime lodging for "grand-teens" who had Maine summer jobs.

Ann was active in numerous Warren social and civic groups over the years (Lady Lions, a women's group she called "Club", Couples Club, Warren HS Alumni, 4-H, and pop-up drama groups.) Ann also loved music, and she tried to see as many Broadway musicals as she could (mostly local productions or at Maine State Music Theater.) Ann also filled in as an English teacher at Warren High School around 1960.

Ann Stred was a member of the Warren Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, was active in Mission Circle, performed financial secretary and treasurer duties, and was part of many governing boards. She was also the go-to transport for after-church restaurant groups consisting of friends and as many grandkids that could fit into her car.

Ann helped run several Norwood Company businesses with her husband (hardware store, bottled gas business, plumbing and heating), and later trained herself in computers and was employed as a secretary at Midcoast School of Technology for over a decade.

Ann was predeceased by her parents Roy and Avis Norwood, her husband Harry Stred, Jr., her sisters Mary Stewart and Lois Engelking, her nephew Mark Erickson, and her son-in-law Peter Armstrong. She is survived by her children Kristin Stred Turgeon (Paul), Harry Stred III (Teri), Lauren Stred Armstrong, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

All are welcome at a funeral for Ann. This will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Warren Baptist Church, 166 Main Street, Warren, Maine 04864, with Reverend Pat Anders officiating.
