Henry M. Malburg Funeral HomeAnna Hornung, age 90, a resident of Bruce Township, passed away Monday, March 16, 2026 at home. Anna was born July 12, 1935 in a German community in Erdewik, Croatia, the daughter of Josef and Eva (Frank) Schoenberger.
At age 9, Anna’s family was forced to flee from their home due to wartime conflicts, migrating to Austria. Anna went to school until age 14, having to give up school to earn money knitting. At 15, the family relocated to Germany, a time in her life which she loved. She met a trio of sisters who became lifelong friends. One of her especially favorite memories was going to the movies every Sunday.
At 19, her family immigrated to Canada, where she met her beloved John. John was also from Croatia, and ended up in Ontario as a result of the war. It did not take long for them to fall in love, tying the knot on May 19, 1956, and starting a family of their own.
In 1964, the two finally immigrated to the States. Anna was always a hard worker and held many positions. Her favorite jobs she had were waitressing and working retail at Crowley’s. She took pride in her work and enjoyed connecting with people.
As an adult, Anna obtained her GED while living in Romeo. Despite limited schooling as a child, it was important to her to finish her education. She was a proud member of Bruce Township and appreciated her neighbors on Hillside. Anna's hobbies included entertaining, cooking, and bowling. An active participant at the Senior Center, she partook in playing pinochle, attending luncheons and going to exercise. She made many friends there over the years whom she spoke fondly of. Anna and John also loved attending Oktoberfest each year where they spent a lot of time on the dance floor. What she especially enjoyed was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She and John had attended countless games, concerts, recitals, and much more.
Anna is survived by her daughters, Edie Novak (Kevin McMahen) and Sue Howard. Grandchildren: Carly Novak, Felicia (Stu) Mann, Courtney Novak, and Anthony Howard. She was blessed with six great grandchildren: Colton, Blaize, Heidi Jean, Belleame, Quentin, and Mara May. John preceded her in death on November 14, 2022.
Funeral Services will take place on Saturday April 4, 2026 at 11:00 AM, with visitation from 10:00 AM until the start of services, at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home in Romeo.
