Anne Bartol Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Glenville Funeral Home - Glenville on Jan. 13, 2026.
Glenville- Anne Bartol died unexpectedly yet peacefully on January 5, 2026. She was born in Westbrook, Maine on December 3, 1943 to the late Germaine and Roland Lavigne. Anne attended schools in Westbook and had a childhood full of love and laughter.
Anne began her career in Caribou, Maine, where she met her husband Curt after her car broke down her first day on the job as a child welfare worker. It was love at first sight, and they married on November 5, 1966. The couple continued their inseparable adventures by becoming doting parents to two children, Gina and Ian. Anne and Curt not only had a beautiful 59-year marriage, but also an incredible professional partnership. Anne earned a master's degree in Journalism and Law at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MS and PhD in Criminal Justice at the State University of New York at Albany. She was a reporter in Illinois and Vermont for several years and later became a Professor of Criminal Justice at Castleton University. Together, Anne and Curt authored over 100 books and scholarly publications and continued their professional writing after retiring from academia.
Anne was an extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved unconditionally and was immensely cherished. Anne was humble about her many accomplishments but fiercely proud of her family, especially her four grandchildren. She was the heart of her family and kept everyone connected through frequent texts (using creative emojis), phone calls (often laughing until she couldn't speak), themed care packages (any theme to make her grandchildren smile), and family gatherings (anywhere, as long as her favorite people were together).
Throughout her life, Anne enjoyed reading, birding, gardening, volunteering, and traveling. Her true passion was writing, and she wrote every single day. She never met a child, dog, or liberal cause she didn't like. She cared deeply about national events and was committed to a world of peace and kindness. After retiring, Anne kept active and engaged by playing with her grandchildren, taking walks with her beloved dog Brady, corresponding with loved ones near and far, and cooking special recipes (often leaving out a key ingredient).
Anne is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Curt R. Bartol. She is also survived by her children Gina Cook and Dr. Ian Bartol, and their spouses Jim Cook and Dr. Soraya Bartol; grandchildren Kai, Madeleine, Darya, and Shannon; brother Michael Lavigne; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of a funeral, a celebration of life will be held this spring in Maine.

We were shocked and saddened to hear about Anne's passing. Anne was a wonderful person and a wonderful colleague whom I had the good fortune to work with in the Criminal Justice Program at Castleton. Her students loved her and she was kind, patient, and encouraging to both her students and her colleagues. My wife Ceil will miss exchanging e-mails with her, sharing notes and updates about our children and grandchildren. Our heart goes out to Curt and the rest of her family members. She will be missed.
