Honoring the Life of Anne Marie Leandre
Early Life and Family
Anne Marie was born in Léogâne, Haiti on September 28, 1943, to the late Esther Noel and Micius Marcellus. Anne Marie met Charles Leandre in the late 1960s. Together they built a life full of love, blessing, and faith. They were graced with four children: Yvon, Wesly, Ginette, and James. She was fortunate to witness the birth and growth of her grandchildren, a joy her late husband did not experience. She is survived by her four children as well as two sisters, Jeannine Marcellus of Boston, Massachusetts, and Gracieuse Marcellus of Montreal, Canada. She was predeceased by two siblings, Camelot Marcellus and Edith Marcellus. Anne Marie also leaves behind one beloved sister-in-law and lifelong friend, Yvette Leandre of Lehigh Acres, Florida.
Faith and Devotion
Anne Marie was a devoted Roman Catholic, attending Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in
Immokalee, Florida. Beyond her role as a mother, she served as a spiritual mentor to her children, encouraging them to pray and trust God with their challenges. Even during her final years, as she faced health struggles, she remained dedicated to her family and her faith, demonstrating love, patience, and guidance until the end.
Education and Professional Life
Anne Marie was educated in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, attending tailoring school (École de Couture). She was a dedicated businesswoman who single-handedly managed her family's affairs in Haiti while her husband traveled to the U.S. in the 1980s. Eventually, Anne Marie joined him, splitting her time between supporting the family's work and being present for her children in Haiti. She spent six months in the U.S. working alongside her husband and six months in Haiti, ensuring her children's education and celebrating holidays with them. Her dedication, resilience, and love left a lasting impression on her family and community.
Stories and Memories
Anne Marie had a vibrant sense of humor and an enduring wisdom that guided her family even in her later years:
A Christmas Memory (2022):
Just after Christmas 2022, her son Wesly, who was stationed in Texas, visited her in
Immokalee, Florida. That evening her sons, Wesly and Yvon, were trying to get her to eat her meal. They tried different ways to encourage her. While Yvon was feeding her, Wesly playfully told her that Easter was just around the corner, and if she ate her food, she would have the energy to travel to Haiti for Easter. She replied, "Yes, my son, I will eat so I will have the energy to go to Haiti with you." She ate her meal, and the plan worked perfectly. The next day, Yvon shared a humorous twist: In her gentle wisdom, she confessed that she had been telling a little story behind Wesly's back. She said, "What is wrong with Wesly? He said if I ate my food, he would pay for the trip to Haiti together for Easter. Wesly must be crazy! I have no business going to Haiti to get killed or kidnapped by the gangs. I said yes to Wesly so he wouldn't be sad while he was leaving for Texas, and I played along to encourage him." The moral of the story: we can never outsmart our parents. Even when they are ill or facing the health challenges, they are always listening, looking out for us, and guiding us with love and wisdom. This story reminds us that no matter what age or illness, a parent remains insightful, protective, and guiding.
A Lesson in Words (2026)
During a conversation about security concerns in Haiti, her son Wesly expressed frustration with strong language. Anne Marie's gentle but firm reply, "Wesly, I don't like when you swear; it is not good. Something can happen to you when you swear." exemplified her lifelong guidance and moral wisdom.
