Anne R. McCarthy, of Johnson City, New York, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born on May 2, 1935, Anne lived a life rooted in faith, love, and quiet strength. A devoted Catholic, her faith was a guiding presence throughout her life, shaping her compassion, humility, and deep sense of gratitude. She found comfort and purpose in her beliefs and lived them through kindness and service to others.

Anne was predeceased by her former spouse, Eugene McCarthy and six siblings, Steve, Paul, Jack, Gene, and Chris Purtell, and Mae Feeney, and her parents Norene and James Purtell. She was born in Little Meadows, P.A., the youngest child of a large and loving Irish family.

Anne retired from a fulfilling career at Binghamton University, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic. In retirement, she devoted herself to what brought her the greatest joy-time spent with her family and grandchildren, whom she loved fiercely and unconditionally. She especially enjoyed gardening, traveling, playing cards, the Buffalo Bills and LA Dodgers, and sharing laughter and companionship with her many wonderful friends. Anne's warmth, generosity, and gentle spirit created lasting bonds with all who knew her.

Anne is survived by her children: Timothy McCarthy; Christopher McCarthy and his wife Jennifer; Margaret McCarthy and Michael Steeg; Theresa Taro and her husband Nicholas; James McCarthy; Joseph McCarthy; her six beloved grandchildren: Vanessa Powley and her husband Chad; Nicholas Taro; Taylor McCarthy; Hannah McCarthy; Tessa McCarthy; and Zachary Taro; her many special nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved; and her special friend, Clyde Tackley, who held a meaningful place in her life.

Anne will be remembered for her steadfast faith, her devotion to family, her love of nature and community, and the many friendships she cherished. Her legacy of love, kindness, and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. She now rejoins loved ones who have gone before her and rests in the peace of Christ.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at St. James Church, 147 Main Street, Johnson City, N.Y. Calling hours will be held at the church prior to the mass from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Saint Thomas the Apostle Cemetery in the spring.

Anne was a wonderful person. I first got to know her through her friendship with my mother, Kay. Then more recently through playing Euchre with her "gang". We had so much fun, and Anne always brought Lindor tort candies to share. The obituary notice describes her perfectly, a woman full of love, faith, and caring. She will be deeply missed as a physical presence in my life but she has roots in my heart and will remain in my memory. May her joy in life give you peace at this time of sorrow.

To know Anne McCarthy was to know a loving, caring, special individual in many ways. She was a person of faith; she was dedicated to family; she set a standard in the work place and yes, she had a wonderful sense of humor. She will be greatly missed. Don Blake, former colleague

My heart broke when I saw this. Anne was such a kind, welcoming person. I will never forget her coming to play cards with my Mom how they laughed!! I will also remember being on the trip to Nashville with her. I wish we could have make it to Oaks Inn for dinner.
I am so sorry for your loss. The McCarthy family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Anne rest now in peace.
