Joan Payne Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Barber Memorial Home, Inc. - Johnson City on Feb. 4, 2026.
On Saturday, January 31, 2026, Joan E. Payne, 87, of Binghamton (formerly of West Windsor) passed away peacefully at Mercy House of the Southern Tier surrounded by her loving family.

Joan was predeceased by her husband Jesse Payne; parents, William and Freda Perrin; sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Pete Coleman; brother-in-law, Delbert Fleming; parents-in-law, Clair and Grace Payne; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Thomas and Katherine Payne; and nephews, Grant Payne and Roderick Holmes.

She is survived by her loving children, David (Rachel) Payne of Port Crane, Joanne (William) Wilson of Endicott, and Laura (Eric) Webster of Binghamton; grandchildren, Whitney (Rich) Graczyk, Anthony (Katelyn) Payne, Caitlin Wilson, and Nathan (Mackenzie) Wilson; and great grandchildren, Adriana, Mason, Owen, and Baby Boy Wilson due in May. Others surviving are her siblings, Ron (Gail) Perrin, Nancy Fleming, Jean (Denis) Wickham, and Joyce (John) Pritchard, along with many special nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, dear friends, and her beloved feline soulmate, Boy.

Joan grew up in Johnson City, NY and retired from the Windsor Central School District after many years of service in the cafeteria at Floyd Bell Elementary School and as secretary to the Principal at C.R. Weeks Elementary School. After retirement she developed an interest in college basketball and became an avid Duke fan. She was very active with her church families (both Community Baptist Church in Port Dickinson and Conklin Presbyterian Church in Conklin) serving as Sunday School teacher, music director for the children's choir, pianist, and member of the adult choir. She was an avid baker - winning many blue ribbons (including Best of Show) at her beloved Harford Fair. She was known as a wonderful cook who showed love by feeding family and friends. She was especially known for her famous blueberry muffins and often stated, "They are good for you…they have oatmeal in them." She was also a talented seamstress and quilter.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at both Good Shepherd Fairview Home and Mercy House for their wonderful care and compassion.

A funeral service will be held at Barber Memorial Home, 428 Main St., Johnson City on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at noon. The family will receive friends from 10 am until time of service.
