Anne (Humphrey) Rothstein, formerly of Bloomfield, age 103, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024, in Farmington, CT. She was born October 27, 1920, in Wakefield to the late Robert and Anne (Durrett) Humphrey.
Anne was a 1939 graduate of Bloomfield High School and attended the University of Kentucky. Her career as a lyric soprano began while singing in church and in summer operas with the visiting San Carlo Opera Company.
In 1945, Anne moved to New York City. Already a member of Chorus Equity, she started auditioning immediately. She appeared in two Broadway shows, Make a Wish and Lost in the Stars, as well as off-Broadway and NBC Opera Theatre. But she was especially proud of having been a member of the Radio City Music Hall ensemble for five years, appearing in four shows a day (five during the holidays!).
While on an out-of-town tour she met her husband Marvin, a trombonist in the band. They thoroughly enjoyed their life in Manhattan but moved to Hartford when Marvin obtained a faculty position at the University of Connecticut. Married for nearly sixty years until Marvin's death in 2011, they lived out their lives in Connecticut, but she never lost her southern charm and unfailingly polite and cheerful demeanor.
Predeceased by her parents, husband Marvin, double cousin Jane McBrayer, and "country" cousin Mary Snider. Survived by niece Ruth Rothstein, nephew Robert Rothstein, and several Kentucky cousins.
A graveside service for Mrs. Anne H. Rothstein will be 10:00 am, Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at Maple Grove Cemetery. The Houghlin Funeral Home of Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.
